I don't really know... I've seen some PvP vids of Mesmers... and most i've seen are with the 2h sword, is that the best wep? and their 1 that most of them are spamming doesn't deal that much dmg... even with the clones :l

A few remarks:
First, videos of players that are mostly just spamming their 1-skill only show that a lot of people still have to learn how to properly play this game. ArenaNet have said that the Mesmer is one of the most complicated classes, and they are right... it takes a lot of practice to learn how to properly play the Mesmer profession and get the most out of him (setting up clones and illusions, knowing when to shatter them, knowing where to position yourself, etc).

Second, the Mesmer has access to a variety of weapons, and just sticking to one particular weapon is definitely not what I would recommend. Equipping 2 weapon sets and switching back and forth between them, will actually make the profession much more versatile and competitive. Exactly which weapon sets to equip depends upon the situation and the player's own preferred playstyle, but just sticking to the Greatsword all of the time definitely doesn't help.

And third, the game is still in fairly early beta, and a lot of what you see isn't properly balanced yet. ArenaNet will definitely invest a lot more time balancing all the professions before release.

The way the memser excels it to not just summon clones, but to learn how and when to destroy them to get the most effect. That's going to take time and practice. The regular skills aren't going to do the full damage..until people master the class mechanic. Some people never will and for those people the mesmer will underperform.

The bottom line is you can do a lot more damage blowing up three clones than you can just using skills, as long as those clones are positioned correctly.

A lot of people in videos were summoning clones in heavy AOE (thus wasting them), letting the clones die without destroying them, and in general not really playing the class to its fullest. I'm not even saying I could do better with just a weekend to practice.

Just like a lot of people were standing there without dodging or were dying without using their self-heal. It's going to take time for people to learn the game.

I know, I was about to shoot myself everytime I saw that stupidity of them spamming 1.
I was like, use other things!! Personally I didn't like the 2h Weapon skills xD
And well yeah must learn... but still looked like not enough dmg hopefully it's not like that cause I got my eye on it!

In the beta video's when someone is running around with a greatsword spamming 1 at close range I feel sad that they got to play and I didn't, even if the mesmer doesn't do the greatest damage all its conditions escapes etc will help it hugely, while the opponent is blinded a moa bird etc, they can't hurt you! This will defiantly help in pvp!

It definitely looks like the mesmer will take a bit more thinking then some of the other professions. I just wish one of it's weapon sets would bring back some of what made mesmers great in GW1. I would like to see some of the abilities that basically let you shut casters down or apply really heavy degen.

well beta is beta, they might change some more skills around. They've already revised a few of the skills to do different things. Spacial Surge is still the first greatsword ability, but now number two is mirror blade. Winds of Chaos is now the number 1 ability for staves and number 4 is Chaos Armor. With a one-handed sword you don't have illusionary leap anymore. But now Leap lets you swap places with you clone within 5 seconds of using the skill so they basically combined the two. the 2nd one-handed sword skill is now blurred frenzy instead of leap (leap is now number 3). Ether bolt now ends it's combo with summoning a clone that will cast ether bolt along side you. You can see the revised skill here (http://www.gw2tools.com/skills#m) on this new skill calculator.

the mesmer's problem isnt his damage.
its that his main concept of "deception" is not viable in pvp.
clones = shatter fodder. sadly.

Not viable in PvP? Clearly you don't know how the mesmer works.
