I've Been Cheated!

Living out in the country I have pretty terrible internet for downloading anything. Last night I drove into town and bought Guild Wars 2 and got home only to realize I don't have a DVD drive in my computer. I popped both discs into my laptop, made .iso's of them and transferred them over. Everything was working fine until I started the install and it immediately started download some patch.

Now I thought to myself, "that's odd, it didn't even install anything." Figuring it was just a patch, I went to bed letting it download. It is now 6 gigs in and only 30% complete. It's having me download the ENTIRE game! What was on the DVD's? Just a download link to the launcher?

We all had to download as much.

The way Anet did it, like most MMO's, you download all the terrain and client side information (graphics, models, etc). The only thing server side is the data associated with your account, monsters, events, trading post, etc. Makes for a much better game lag wise.

Since the game launched there has been several patches, so yes you are patching the game. The copy on the dvd came out way back, you can always buy an external dvd player and connect it to your pc via USB port. Or if you PC have the bay you can buy an internal dvd player, they are dirt cheap and install it yourself or take the pc to town to one of those gekees place and have a teenager do it for you

How big was the patch that you downloaded? Or all patches combined, roughly?

Not sure last time I checked was around 6 gig, but I may be wrong (all patches combined)

Well I'm now 6.25 gigs in with 148,000 files left. The last .25 gigs have downloaded maybe 2,000 files. Here's to hoping that last 148,000 are really really small...

Most games have the Launcher client on disc these days for MMO's due to the volitile and constantly growing nature of the MMO beast. This is not abnormal, it really is the norm.

Sorry this wasn't clear in the packaging.

However I don't know what would have been on the second DVD...seems strange....

And...who DOESN'T have a DVD player in their computer these days?? That's so 1999 lol

I just built this computer and forgot to put one in due to how little I ever use cd/dvd's.
