^ that video among others ruined swtor for me.. gw2 is tba 2011, but there havent even been open betas yet.. do you think it'll be in q1 2012?

Also, do weapons change the spells? The place the weapon functions are (f1 f2) are occupied by elements

    Haha welcome to mix =D

Yeah, I was a huuuge TOR fanatic for about a year and a half, then one day on facebook a buddy of mine posted a link about GW2 animations being so much better than TOR, and well.. I had followed GW2 a bit prior to that, but after, damn.. Haven't looked back.

Although after beta testing TOR, I'm very confident in my choice to surrender completely to GW2.

They change spells for other classes, but the Elementalist is unique in that you only have your 1 weapon at a time without swapping. Elements have replaced the other weapon, so while if you've equipped a staff and engage in battle you're going to be stuck using the staff skills only, however you have 4 elements to swap around each getting 5 different skills.. So yeah.. no complaining =D

    (this was my original link)

why is this guy's spells completely different in the following link than in the original???

oh.. the guy in the first video is using a staff, while the arenanet player n the 2nd is using a scepter and force..

I looked up the skills and Idk why the professional pvper is using sceptor/book.. the spammable spell for that is only doing 200-500 in the video, while staff fireball does like 2k and hits multiple targets, gets a reflectove 5 second-ish bubble, and an earthquake.
sceptor/force gets a healing phoenix, a crappy-looking wall of fire, a knock down, a maybe 2 second reflective gale (crappy version of the bubble mentioned above), and rock barrier

Staff just seems better, but he is a competitve PvPer who WORKS with the designers, so he must have a reason, but.. I don;t understand it.
    Opinions?

Hi Algroshaw, welcome to these forums.

What they have said is, that closed beta will start near the end of the year (friends and family only; no applications are accepted). After the closed beta, they will take whatever time they need to fix or change things based on the results of the closed beta. Then they will do an open beta, and again, after the open beta they will take whatever time they need to fix or change things. Only then they will announce the release date.
So if all goes well, all mechanics work as they are, and no major changes are needed, then yes, (late) Q1 2012 would be possible. But personally I'm putting my bets on Q2.

TotalBiscuit is testing/reviewing the game... which means he is trying out all the different weapon sets and their effects. Also, as there are no healers in this game (that's your own responsibility), sometimes it's better to avoid damage or to block other players and prevent them from getting closer, than to actually do lots of damage yourself.

if you look at the skils, I dont think that the septer has more utility to prevent enemies from getting closer or negating damage, besides a knock down and an extra heal

staff on the other hand, has a reflective bubble, frost cc, and an earthquake knock down (off the top of my head)

Well, if you look at for example at fire attunement, the staff has some AoE skills. The focus instead has flame wall and fire shield. Although both do damage, they do damage to foes that try to pass through the wall/shield. I don't think any sane enemy will want to be standing close to you when you have the fire shield active. And earthquake is not a staff skill, but a dagger skill!

But yeah, different attunement do play different roles, so it's sometimes a bit hard to figure out exactly what is best for what purpose in any given situation.

By earthquake I mean churning earth.

Flame wall only does anout 700 dmg. I wouldn't gve it a second thought. I'm not going to stand there and let the mage free cast on me and not do dmg. I'd cross it withut a thught.
As for the fire bubble, I'd probably switch to a ranged weapon. No big deal. Not gamebreaking.
