What about sylvari=elves is so obvious? I'm not seeing it. Classic elves are ancient/ageless...Sylvari are the youngest race (the oldest members being in their 20s I believe). Elves are warmblooded...sylvari are plants.

Dryads I'd give you...classic elves, no.

I also think you're trying way too hard on the dwarves = asura. Both being short isn't really enough. Besides, there were dwarves in GW1, but they all turned to stone.

Dyrads have a similar looks to elves...granted dryads have a deeper history than elves in RL history. So really Ruse is right in the assessment that sylvari are are more related in appearence than to elves.

And since you seem to reference D&D books for race reference ...which seems to be more forgotten realms based...I would reference the asura as being closer related to the gnomes of krynn than the underdark dwarves of FR...and as for dark elves living in underground kingdoms...well again that's a FR reference mostly...original dark elves were based on if they had knowledge that would bring them into the light or not....then again go back far enough and all elves were kinda evil

But all in all ANet is doing a great job with their races and hope they don't fall in the traps lots of other MMOs do and use race/jobs from other popular games just to try and bring in more people...which seeing how ANet does business they won't.

But these are just my random thoughts

I really don't find it limiting at all. If you recall Vanilla WoW, everyone picked the faction their friends were playing, which only left you with 4 playable races. While there were 9 playable classes, but they were race-locked like mad, and if I recall Shaman was only playable on Horde and Pally was only playable on Alliance. So if you look at it that way, GW2 has more to offer than Vanilla WoW, not to mention much more enhanced character customization and story.

You just have to understand, WoW is where it is today after many, many years and a crap ton of money, heh. Give GW2 a chance, I really don't think it will disappoint.
