Thread: Gold Guide (9 tips to first gold in guild wars 2)

What I want is confirmation on that MF gear on harvesting. And if it works on harvesting, if it also woks on salvaging.

Salvage is what I do... and part 2 of salvaging. Use either Crude (which you can buy for karma) or basic (88 coppers each, but they are a set of 25 compared to the 15 for the crude so less slots taken up for same amount of salvages)

The higher level salvaging kits for the mast part are nto worth it for general salvaging. the main use of something higher, such as Masterwork salvage is the % change to get the rungrade out of the object. meaning the rune/jewel/talisman that is socketed into an object. I've made more money doing this a few times then I would have just selling the item. Before doing this, look up the price of the upgrade component, It's not worth it in a lot of situation, you lose 15% if it sells on the AH, 5% listing and 10% more taken out on successful sale, that the 62 coppers for each salvage of a masterwork kit plus the price of the item is worth more then you get selling the rune, which case you just lost money. If the rune is worth alot. check the item price itself on the AH. A lost of those are higher priced for the same reason the rune is worth more.

I always salvage white stuff, though i have recently stopped salvaging heavy armor, medium armor gives you leather, light armor gives you cloth, and heavy gives you ore heh. And if you are getting iron ore off your armors at that level then it is probably worth more selling it to a vendor, Iron ore is rock bottom as there's just so much of it. At higher levels when you start getting other things,

Though that being said I have not sold any of my crafting materials on the AH, and have had about 5 golds so far, used about 2 to pay for a bank expansion by gold to gems. Sold my Unided dyes for a lot more then 5 silvers, though prices has dropped alot (6.5 silver each here, yay) heh. 4

Unided dyes are actually a gamble, most of them will open up as common and get you less then 1 silver on the ah so not worth it, but you can get every dye out of them, so my guildie got a black dye, worth 3 golds... so he made more opening them just from luck then otherwise. But that really depends on your luck and odds are not in your favor. (I opened one and got 20 silver for it, can always just open 1 and sell the rest and figure, not losing much as it's just 1, but if you get really lucky, then grats.)

Selling for 1 less than the lowest seller is a horrible practice, you essentially ruin the economy. If everyone does this the items becomes worth nothing or sell for 1copper above vendor price. Don't encourage this please.

This, of course, assumes that people do not change their behavior in regards to price signals.

    1. Sell unidentified dyes. These easily sell for 5 silver to the highest buyer instantly. If you identify them then they are usually worth far less money.
Solid advice all around. I'll have two minor additions, though:

When selling unidentified dye, remember that you might be selling a bit of a gamble. I have never sold unidentified dye and picked up 3 rare colours, one of them being black and selling for 2g50s. Now you go ahead and calculate the odds for yourself.

Another thing everyone should make their own: The secret to being rich is not how you make money, it's how you avoid spending it. Sounds simple, but it is a safe way to success.

My luck is notoriously horrendous. At 5 silver a pop, you'd make that 2.5g after selling 50 unidentified dyes. I guarantee you that I could open up 50 dyes and never open up a dye that would sell for more than 5 silver. So, I just sell them all at 5.5 silver a piece and wash my hands of the whole thing.

Most yellows I've seen seem to sell for pretty cheap as well (I've worn nothing but rares since hitting level 35, all purchased off the TP). You're basically telling people to gamble away their money and hope to get something that sells for more than all of the gear they've wasted in the forge.

    This is what I do:
    1-70:
White: Salvage. Whites sell for dirt cheap to NPCs, obviously don't sell on the TP, and generally net you several raw materials for crafting. Keep in mind what you're going to get from the item, if you don't need any more wood, don't salvage staffs or other wood weapons. If you don't need leather, don't salvage medium armor.
Blue: Vendor. These don't sell on the TP, and you get roughly the same amount of salvage material as you would from a white item, however NPCs pay much better for blues.
Green: Save it if it's something you would want to use in the mystic forge. Generally I save any greens that are my armor type, or one of my weapons. Once you get 4 of a kind, transmute them. You'll definitely get a higher level item, and occasionally get a rare. If it's an armor class or weapon you can't use, check the TP, but most likely it will be vendor fodder.
Yellow: Save all your bound yellows for mystic forging. Any unbound yellow that you won't be using sell on the TP.

    71-80:
Salvage everything, the mats that you can get out of items are selling for way more than what NPCs are paying for the base item. Exceptions are good rares, sell those on the TP, save combinations for yourself to make exotics.
Great post. This is exactly what I do.

I probably shouldn't, but I run all 8 professions between four characters, so I use every material out there. That means when I hit a new tier of materials, I salvage everything I can get my hands on, and it hurts my pocket a bit. But once I've gotten my crafts up to par, I stop salvaging equipment that won't give me cloth, and I sell the rest to the vendor.

Never use Un-ID dyes. Sell them. There are over 400 dyes out there, and only about 6 of them sell for more than a G, and maybe about 12 of them that sell for more than 30s. The odds are way against you. Dont gamble, let other people gamble.

Excellent post! I especially like the mention of doing "dailies", because it's not at all obvious. Most people are still ignoring achievements I think.

I really thought MF affected harvesting, started getting extra pebbles, cinnamon sticks etc when I had MF going.

But I am not so sure now...

Arena could just have changed it or something else is going on, defiintely getting more stuff from harvesting, it might have to do with your level, who knows.

I do know you can get Black Lion tools in Black Lion chests which improve gathering alot and can gather any resource.

Also, how your server is doing in WvW affects Pve, for example you can gain pluses to harvesting, crafting, xp etc...

My server, Seafarers Rest, had a good run recently, collecting alot of those bonuses, sadly it came to a end last night. I think they reset when you server loses at WvW.
