Thread: WvW commanders

    I'm with Vayne, commander status will be obtained by non-competent people whether the criteria to obtain it is easy or tough.

    On my server, a mid-populated one, i think the regulars have sorted out who are the good leaders (and we have some excellent ones) and we do quite well considering we're totally outnumbered most of the time.

    I really like WvWvW, and i'm loving the game (is that a pre-fix to all rants, nowadays?) but the fiasco concerning free transfers was plain amateurish on behalf of the developers. In map chat we'd get people saying "is this server a good WvW place??...if not they'd just move on. Bad, bad mistake in my opinion letting it go on for so long. I understand Anet are aware of the problem and have already addressed the issue so i'm thankful for that, i just hope it's not too late.

    I'm sure the reason for the free transfers is that guesting isn't working and they are having trouble getting it to work. They promised people they could play with their friends, and since guesting was a major feature, they felt they had to allow tranfers. At least free transfers are down to once a week now.

    But in time, when guesting gets up and running and server transfers cost money, I think that everything will balance out. The real issue, right now is getting servers that are relatively equal fighting each other.

    We got smashed this week in WvW.

    Any one ever thought of Levels of command?

    Blue for beginner

    Yellow for X amount Towers, X amount Keeps, X Amount castles taken

    Orange: "" ""

    etc.

    Now that would be proof and show rankings as to who has successfully taken objectives as commander.

    I actually kind of like this idea. You should suggest it on the official forums. We have a number of commanders on Darkhaven, and while they usually aren't on all at once I was in one of the borderlands a few days ago and we had 3 commanders and maybe 10 other people and it was kind of confusing cause they all wanted us to follow them different directions.

    I think its a great idea bcuz the new commanders still are wet behind the ears and thier being confused with seasoned commanders. Also along with taking objectives it should include defending ibjectives too. Unfortunately i dont have access to the official forums.

    I think this is a great idea. So often my server (Ferguson's Crossing) gets commanders who seem to answer everything with ZERG, ZERG, ZERG! I'm not a commander there, but today we were getting our asses handed to us and I and few others managed to rally everyone together and we managed to retake our borderlands and put up a good fight. None of us had the little blue arrow, but we were the ones who were able to figure out how best to retake our map.

    For me, command isn't all about taking things though. It's about establishing your strategy, determining who will fill what role, and defending your keeps/towers/camps once you have taken them. I was running all over the map today setting up siege, defending keeps, taking towers and camps, and coordinating people. Perhaps being a commander should be something not bought, but earned through having people "vote" you as commander. At first it'll be tricky getting people to agree, but eventually people will cement themselves as intelligent and competent leaders and it'll be more likely that they'll be chosen.

    If it makes yall feel better, they will soon add another thing over commander, a higher rank I guess you could say because to many people are getting commander.

    Thats what i.mean, higher lvl achievements for higher grade commander

    I agree with the OP completely. As far as what Vayne and some others say, sure there always WILL be people who don't deserve it that get it no matter what system is in place. But that's not an argument not to have the best system possible in place.

    Yes it is a gold sink, but a poorly designed one. I can design more gold sinks for WvW and more effective ones. Guild and individual items that people would pay for. Unique items. Keep upgrades, such as having the keep have your name. You win it, you claim it, pay 5g and now it is Bokiz keep...and thats awesome and you bet your sweet bootie Id do that. And million other ideas that don't make it so a gold farmer can go on karma runs. (which happens)




    To address Vayne's other comment: I WvW alot and know which commanders are good. But 50% of the general players there don't...so if most of them follow the commander (as is the intended game mechanic) that's really hurting our side. Now you can say, well they should kjnow better...but you're also the guy that say that people DONT have to be hardcore and work super hard...I don't think its unreasonable as a new WvW (or very casual) player, you log in, see a commander and assume they earned that somehow and are a good person to follow.

    I don't say I think they should know better. But I think that over time, most people WILL know better. For a game that's out a couple of months, and most of the commanders haven't been around for all of that time, and people are still changing servers a lot, of course they won't know but that doesn't mean a month from now, two months, six months they won't learn. Some people need more time. And of course some people will never learn, but that's not the majority.

    The thing is, I agree with pretty much all the suggestions in this thread. I agree that commander should be tiered. I agree that there are possbily better ways of doing things, than are being done now.

    I'm simply saying that no matter what you do, people who don't deserve the titles will find a way to get them. But actually the ideas in this thread are awesome.
