Yes it is a gold sink, but a poorly designed one. I can design more gold sinks for WvW and more effective ones. Guild and individual items that people would pay for. Unique items. Keep upgrades, such as having the keep have your name. You win it, you claim it, pay 5g and now it is Bokiz keep...and thats awesome and you bet your sweet bootie Id do that. And million other ideas that don't make it so a gold farmer can go on karma runs. (which happens)
To address Vayne's other comment: I WvW alot and know which commanders are good. But 50% of the general players there don't...so if most of them follow the commander (as is the intended game mechanic) that's really hurting our side. Now you can say, well they should kjnow better...but you're also the guy that say that people DONT have to be hardcore and work super hard...I don't think its unreasonable as a new WvW (or very casual) player, you log in, see a commander and assume they earned that somehow and are a good person to follow.
