Thread: Cannot boot game

    Cannot boot game

My computer is old, which isn't helping, but every since I installed the game a month ago, if I didn't reboot my computer just before I played the game, when I tried to load it up it would just sit there and do nothing. Now I can't get the game to load at all. Any suggestions?

Hard to diagnose this without seeing the system specs, task manager etc - but it sounds like there was something eating memory (progressively using more and more over a period of time), therefore you had to have a fresh boot prior to executing the game so whatever it was didn't have time to consume the memory. Not sure though.

Perhaps try looking at your task manager (right click task bar -> Start Task Manager -> Click Processes tab -> sort by memory high to low). Take a look and see what is consuming the most.
Check free space on your hard drive.
Check processor performance and temperatures ( A program that I use is http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html )

Might want to consider upgrading the PC if it is indeed under spec'd for this game (ofcourse this is easier said then done).

Intel core 2 cpu 6600 @ 2.4 ghz, 2gb of ram, the graphics card is some cheaper 70 dollar card, an ati 5500 maybe? I used can you run it and i was way past the min req, I use to get an error when it wouldn't load but I ran a two system restores to see if that would help and now they won't come up, it was something about checking the diskette. Then i did a system restore and couldn't get that message and got a different one about failing to load.

That computer is way under spec'd, but do the above mentioned steps and see if you can clear up as much of that 2gig as you can and reattempt to start the game. Might want to run a scandisk on your harddrive as well and see if you have any sector (assuming not SSD based on other hardware) issues.

I downloaded the program, does it do anything, but tell me what my system has? Do you recommend anything to do to help me in the sort term since i was able to get it to work for quite some time.

Did you walk through the steps outline for checking task manager as mentioned?
    Did you run scandisk?

yes however I wouldnt know what to remove. The highest thing listed was like 20k. then 15k, then everything use is under 8k. I ran a system check and it claimed to have fixed something. What confuses me is it was working just fine and now it progressive got harder to boot. Would a reform of the hard drive help or anything else?

    Okay dokey.

Boot is a term used for starting a PC. Execute or 'run' is specifically used for a program state change. So when you say harder to boot, given your first message, I'm assuming you mean start GW2?

Secondly, look at the names of the applications listed in task manager and apply some basic troubleshooting logic. And the idea here was not to simply glance at it, but to notice a trend.
    1) Start PC
    2) Open task manager, sort it, and keep it open while doing normal tasks
    3) Anything shooting to unacceptable levels? 20k is pretty minimal.
For instance - being at work (clearly working hard) my work laptop (only 4g memory) chrome is at ~120k (not the highest, either)
    4) Observe memory allocation while attempting to execute GW2 and see what's going on
    5) There's also a performance tab that you can observe spikes in usage

System check is not the same as a scan disk. Google scan disk, it is a DOS based program that runs in (MS-DOS) that will do a sector by sector check on the physical drive.

Not to be rude here, but you're trying to have a champagne diet on a beer budget. Upgrade your PC, if nothing else, start with memory.

Thank you for all your help! Do you know why it worked before? Is it like saying the water bottle is full and each time the game ran some of that water emptied out and now its bone dry?

I ran the game and had task manager up, gw2 was at 87k in processes and when i went to performance cpu usage was 2% and pf usage stayed at 1.3gb.

Your water analogy is pretty much dead on, except GW2 isn't dumping the water, something else (another process) was/did. 87k I would say is absolutely acceptable for GW2, given I'm not at home I can't confirm.
