So how many are we now?

Greetings. I figured my first post would be something that has been a lingering question for some time now.
Simply put... How many are playing GW2 now if you put EU and NA together? And how many games, digital and retail, have been sold so far?
Also excelsior first month with GW2 - Things are looking good!

Not that Amazon is the best way to judge, but it's still number 3 on Amazon in sales for PC games. The only two above it is like a $10 multipack from EA and X-Com, which is just on the verge of coming out. Several other popular games are lower on Amazon, so I'm pretty hopeful.

The positive notion: On our local #1 electronic/computer sales shop, GW2 is #1 and MOP only #2 (granted, the special edition is #3... :P). Sooo technically, GW2 is still the undefeated champion!

Negative note: A ton of people bought the game and don't play it anymore. So whatever sales number you can research, it has little actual meaning to the current population. MOP is again skewing this, so we should probably wait until christmas business is over before making guesstimates as to the actual population.

Hey, I'm not suprised, a lot of returning WoW players who brought GW2 just want to milk the new content dry and when that is done with they'll be back. And since GW2 ain't P2P you can come back anytime you like and it's all good.

I'm not sure if it's all good. I prefer a stable community instead of a constant coming and going.

I don't think that people who play the content and leave for other games until the new content comes out is more or less stable than what we're talking about here. No one I know that used to play WoW was playing until MoP came out. They're waiting for the new raids and all geared up and in a holding pattern. Thus they're not playing.

Guild Wars 2 will be the same way. People will play the content, new content will come out and they'll come and play it.

    How is it any different?

You're talking about a WoW that had no content for a year or so... hardly the usual case. It is very different.

People leave and go back to WoW all the time. And some people leave and never go back. Remember, I had a couple of hard core raiders in the family. One of them is back playing MoP, one isn't.

Games develop followings and have hard core players that stay for the long haul. Even games like Rift that came out of nowhere still have a devoted following of players, if not a big one. Lotro still has a devoted following.

I don't see how WoW is any different than any of these other games, except for maybe the size of the stable population...but even that's shifting. This game went from 12.4 million subs to 9.1 million in about a year. That doesn't strike me as a stable population.

Guild Wars 2, by contrast, is just starting out. People will try it and leave, like any other MMO. Some people will love it and stay. If the stuff that continues to come out from it is good, more people will stay than leave. When new expansions come out, people will buy them, the same way they do other MMOs.

Basically every subscription MMO loses people after the first month, then the first 3 months and then the first 6 as people either tire of the game, or decide the game is not for them. Those that persist past that point become the stable population.
