Anybody else think Ranger is gutted?

Don't tell me I have no skill. The Nerfs slowly whittled down my desire to play Ranger, so now I am stuck without a Main. I literally cannot, and will not, play as a Ranger. ANet has gone too far with the Nerfs. Just because all of the Botters use Ranger doesn't mean we should be punished. Hey, ANet, BANNING the botters is more effective than Nerfing their favorite Profession to Hell and back.

Anet does ban botters. Botters use hacked accounts which means that as soon as they ban one, they just use another hacked account. That sort of thing will take time to solve.

And I have to assume you're talking about PvP, because my ranger is still way powerful in PVe.

Yeah it's all fine and dandy in PvE, because the mobs are rather stationary, so our pets can do SOMETHING at least, but in PvP a Pet literally cannot hit a moving target. A Pet is supposed to account for a large percentage of our damage, which is why our Weapon Skills deal close to none, at least, compared to other Professions. So if the Pets don't work then you're stuck with 60% of a class. Then ANet decides to Nerf the one weapon that they haven't completely ruined yet: The shortbow. Think about it though, can a Ranger outdo any other class at anything?

    Longbow Warrior > Longbow Ranger
    Greatsword Warrior > Greatsword Ranger
    Shortbow Thief > Shortbow Ranger
    Sword/Dagger Thief > Sword/Dagger Ranger
    Sword/Torch Mesmer > Sword/Torch Ranger
    Sword/Warhorn Warrior > Sword/Warhorn Ranger
    Axe/Warhorn Necro > Axe/Warhorn Ranger
    Mesmer Pets > Ranger Pets
    Necro Pets > Ranger Pets
    Axe/Dagger Necro > Axe/Dagger Ranger

There isn't anything that is worth playing about Ranger anymore, unfortunately.

I can't answer you directly but my son WvW's with a ranger and he says he's doing fine. I'm sure SPvP is a whole different animal though.

I'd be interested in hearing from others about this.

My Ranger uses Axe/Torch, and since you haven't listed that one, I must be fine =P.

What nerf are you referring to specifically? I usually read the update posts and I haven't seen anything referring to pets. Or the shortbow (unless you're talking about the added milliseconds to Crossfire).

Actually, this is definitely not true. I have seen the devs state on the official forum that you should never rely on a pet to down an opponent. You can control your pets to give your opponents a distraction, and to apply conditions or whatnot to your opponents, but you are still the one responsible for doing the damage... just as it is with the Mesmer's clones (though ranger pets definitely do more damage than mesmer clones, especially if you control them well and use your traits effectively).
And while I admit that there currently isn't any particular weapon set that rangers have a higher dps with than all other professions, there is a lot that rangers are good at (and you can't really compare the same weapon set for two different professions 1v1, because the playstyles are so different). For example, rangers are masters at condition damage... meaning that they may not do the most damage in one hit, but they can lock you in place, shut down your health regeneration and drain your health in a matter of seconds, while they don't even have to come close. So if you're looking for glass cannon builds, then yes, those might be a bit harder to create for a ranger... but that doesn't mean rangers have no use anymore.

There's a lot of flexibility in the builds/traits system... the challenge is to find those builds that do best against your opponents, and use them to the max of your abilities. Stating that there isn't anything that is worth playing about rangers anymore, sounds to me like admitting that you're not clever enough to outwit your opponents.

    ^This.

The same reason my Ranger is specced for conditions. And one also has to keep in mind that in PvP, if it was about the ONE, then it wouldn't be team-based PvP. Not everything is about how much damage you do.

A large part of the problem is just the pets. Pets will always be difficult to balance/control/improve the AI. A ranger pet has 4 skills that they use. And you can control only one!!?!??!? of their skills. Your pet will use the other 3 skills at random whenever he feels like it.

Some pet skills are useless because of that. For example, a spider pet. They have a skill that has a terribly long casting time that spawns a poison field. In static PvE combat this can be handled most of the time. But in PvP people move and the HUUUUGE casting time will make sure that your spider will never ever hit its target with the poison field. The poison field is always at the wrong place.
This is just one example to give you an idea, I could mention more but it would make my post extremely long.

There is no observe mode/ladder system so I have no hard evidence, but ranger isn't used in top teams for a reason. And it's not, because the class is really terrible. But more that others classes outshine the roles that the ranger can execute.
Ranger can't hold points when comparing them to Guardian/Engineer/Mesmer.
Rangers can't be a bursty roamer, thief shines in that role.
They are better in 3v3 fights, but they don't offer enough support like the Ele does. And not the dps that the warrior has.
So basically, why take a ranger?

Sure they will always feel 'fine' in PvE, because well that's PvE. I can complete DE's and Skill challenges in lvl 65 area's just fine on my 58 ranger. But it doesn't mean that other classes can't do it better. Which is what this thread is about.

What is fine? How do you measure doing fine? Does he run with a large group(5+ people)? Then it's impossible to know if you're doing fine. Running with less people will make it easier.
And 1v1's in WvW give a better indication if he can win most of them. But even then you don't know what level your opponent is. If your son is a lvl 80 ranger then he will most likely win easily vs anyone under lvl 40. You just don't know!

'Doing fine' really isn't a good way to measure a profession. It's also personal when you consider something fine. I know back in GW1(near the end), my GvG guild was the only guild trying unconventional(trying new things) builds that we knew aren't the best we could. And they did 'fine' as we could win with those vs any team. But the fact still remained that our build was basically crap and when our opponents would try them. They would fail horribly. Just our personal and team skill was so good compared to other top 10 guilds that we still had a chance. And we demolished any guild outside the top 30 with our terrible 'fun' builds.

By doing fine I mean he does well in a number of 1 v 1s he gets into as well as generally but you make a good point about being level 80. I have no idea if the 1v1s are against other level 80s or not. To hear him talk about it, it's doing great. I say fine, because I don't necessarily believe him.

Most people think they're good drivers, but most aren't.
