Thread: Toughness vs Vitality

  1. #11
    Yeeesh, these threads.

The easiest way to explain it: Vit is worthless without toughness. Toughness is GDLK without vit.

It doesn't matter if you have 28k health if I can crit you for 12k. You'd be surprised how many warriors go "I have so much life, I don't need any toughness. I'm unbeatable!"

I mainly PVE and my whole build is built around power/precision/toughness. I can take a hit in dungeons but also deal the hit as well. I think toughness is key for survival in any class build focusing more on melee combat. I play a shout warrior using a great sword. The runes I put in my gear are Superior Rune of the Soldier giving me vit/toughness and also now my shouts cure conditions.

Vitality lets you outlast conditions and survive burst damage. Toughness allows you to take sustained non condition based damage. It really just depends on what you are doing which is better and you really should be getting at least a tiny bit of both.

This isn't true. Toughness is a far better fix against burst damage than vitality. If you don't believe it, take a look in the official Guild Wars 2 strategy guide which says the same thing.

In the Guild Wars universe, damage mitigation has always been superior to healing. In the same way, toughness is damage mitigation. If you have less toughness, you take more damage, which means that your vitality doesn't last for as long, because with burst you don't have time to heal.

Toughness mitigates that damage so that you don't take as much of the burst and you can survive TO heal. Without toughness there are bursts you simply won't survive.

That makes no sense at all. Burst damage removes the effect of healing completely. It is a simple function of effective health points. If you ignore healing and assume massive incoming damage and ignore all other factors than vitality easily out functions toughness. It isn't even very close. In GW1 it wasn't quite the same but GW2 works with completely different mechanics.

The function of toughness is to stop manageable spurts of damage and to maximize the effectiveness of healing, it is not meant to stop burst damage. This isn't one of those it could go either way and is up for debate type of things, if you think toughness is better for burst damage you are flat out wrong our misunderstand what burst damage means (which is possible).

This has been the same in every game for the past 10 years though. HPs are good against burst, armor is good against sustained damage. Classic HP pool vs mitigation scenario and almost every game has gone the same way and that is HP is better vs burst.

Snarky comments with no basis in fact do your argument no good, if you disagree show why with math but I know you can't since you are simply wrong.
