Thread: Is there really a need for so much classification?

Is there really a need for so much classification?

Hello. I just wanted to give a suggestion about the organization of the forum.

At current, every forum section has about 5 different forums. In addition, most of these forums have at least 2 sub-forums. This really splits up posts and makes the forums seem to be going even slower than they really are.

I would understand if the forums were going so fast that it was hard for people to see all the posts, but that is not the case for this board. We have stuff in forums still on the front page posted a month ago. I think it gives visitors the impression the board isn’t very active (or is even less active, in this case).

Maybe you could do a bit of condensing or removing some sub-forums and letting those topics spill into the main forum? If this place speeds up to 90 mph, you can always put the sub-forums back if they are needed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do see your point, and it's true that right now, in some forum/subforum sections, posts are few and far between... mostly due to the fairly low number of active posters. However, please do be aware that over 4000 people have signed up for this forum, and more sign up on a regular basis. Most of those have never posted, but we do believe (and hope) that the number of active posters will change drastically once the game is released.
Reorganizing the forums at this stage would mean that we most likely have to reorganize them again once the game is released, to make sure that all posts are in their relevant sections and that members can easily find them.
In fact, once the game is released we will probably add more sections, such as a tech support section.

So while it's true that forum sections will fill up quite slowly at the current rate, I personally think it's better to have a clear structure for everything and be prepared for the game's release, even if it's a little too big for the current post count. But if, after the game release, it turns out that our number of active posters doesn't grow quite as fast as we hope, or that certain sections are still under used, then we will definitely consider condensing them.

Very well. Though, I must admit I'm sceptical that there will be that many posters. I've seen forums with 10 times as much activity and only half as many forum spots that ran perfectly fine. You have roughly as many forum spots as the WoW main board.

    Whatever you like though.

I actually kind of agree with the OP. I think the splits for the news section are necessary...I'm not sure about the rest. It feels like a "general discussion" would cover a lot of subforums we have right now. But that's just my 2 coppers.

The layout of the site was created with aspect of the future in mind. We dream big around here. I agree that a lot of it is unnecessary as of now, but I'd almost rather be prepared then scrambling around later to add what is needed. When GW2 comes out, the GW forums might end up getting condensed.
