In my last game if you died in PvE you lost literally millions of experience, out of the billions you needed for one level. There was a legal in-game bot that you pretty much needed to be running 24/7 to make any progress in the 3 most important fields (leveling, gold, skill upgrades). It was also an open world PvP game, and people would set their bots up before work/bed and afk for 8 hours, then come back and see someone had PK'd them 5 minutes after they left. The bots came from the cash shop. The timer continued to tick while you were dead, so you were not only not making any progress, but you were wasting real money every second you lay there dead.
You didn't lose exp on death if you were PK'd, only if you were killed by a mob. We had an update one time that meant there was no more 1-shotting people if you were OP (like I was) instead your HP would go straight to 1, so it would have to be a 2 shot. Of course this led to everyone buffing up and whacking the afk player as hard as they could to get them to 1hp, then letting the mob they were attacking finish them off.
There was of course a very simple way to ignore all penalties from death - an item from the cash shop. Though I'm not sure which was worse... losing real money every time you died or millions of experience (possibly a month's worth of 24/7 time and money)/your items if you were PK'd.
