Okay, so I just started playing and I'm enjoying it so far but I was wondering where the "Stormwind" style city is where you would get into group and hang out by default. I came across a place with a tavern I went into to meet some girl Petra and defend her from some bandits, but the city surrounding it was basically deserted aside from some lower level characters.
I'm having fun so far though and I'm really enjoying these random events that spawn while I'm running around.
not sure what stormwind is but for popular town try lions arch, it is pretty much center of all. you cn get there trough asura gates or running there .. personal quests get you there on around level 30.

Yep, Lion's Arch or any place where you have a bank and a Black Lion Trading Company
Each starting area has a city near by, normally just back up the road from where you started, Divinities Reach for humans, The Grove for the Sylvari and I can't remember the rest. I would compare these to Ironforge and Undercity more than Stormwind, everything you need is there to start with but they are not the main hubs. Lions Arch is more like Dalaran was in Lich King, everyone congregates there. Be warned the cities are big, I realised this when I saw that you had several waypoints within a Divinities Reach, Imagine needing Gryphon points in each district in Stormwind and you get the idea. Spend time to wander around them and find all the viewpoints and jumping puzzles its well worth it and easy XP (not that normal leveling is difficult)
Yeah you can find a few people at the beginning of character creation places, but you will find a lot of people in Lions Arch near the trading quarters. Its the center city of the game.
Lion's Arch is the main city where a lot of people hang out.
