One cool example of a recent good quest was the Magic Ticket one in Shimmersand. If you found the rare spawn "chicken" fight NPC and won your bet you got a Magic Ticket as well as a title and achievement. The Magic Ticket didn't explain anything, you had to wander around following clues about a person looking for it until you ran into the next NPC, then you were sent on a long series of quests and adventures that ended with you getting the "the Magician" title and access to an area filled with easter eggs just outside the game world.
Not to mention questing when original EQ came out. Quests were rare and some quest givers were rarely around but when you found one you were sent on a series of amazing journeys with an awesome backstory to follow. I'd love to see that here, I want to be led across the world on epic journeys that take me days or weeks to complete. I want to investigate backstory and help NPCs. Dynamic events are fun but they aren't nearly the same thing.
I definitely miss the old epic quests that took you all over. I'm not sure those would work that well with the waypoint system in GW2 though. I'm glad they didn't go with quests on rails like WoW though.
I hate heart quests. Besides boring most are just plain stupid. Granted 'kill 12 of this or 30 of that' wasn't fun either but the hearts are just as bad. Transform into a wolf, for example, and sniff out poison. What? Lol. Most of them I just hope there is an event nearby and I can get 2 birds with one stone. Unfortunately, with trying to do map completion you cannot just skip them like you can 'kill 12 of this or 30 of that'.
I enjoy the hearts, especially the fact that there are multiple ways of doing each one. I wish just discovering things was enough for map completion though. The important incentive is to get you to explore, not to make you have to complete every little thing imo. Oddly enough I tend to skip events, they are either too long or too repetitive in general. Either kill a bunch of waves of the same mob or do some long and to me boring escort is the majority of them. I will do events if I walk right into them but I rarely seek them out.
Sure and I like to explore, finding ways to get to the Vitas and finding missing POI, I love that stuff. One thing down the road I thought I might eventually like to do is work on getting my Legendary but you need 100% map completion, I think. And I know now that won't happen, because of the hearts. And yes, I love Killing the Claw of Jormag but after the 50th time, its getting to where I don't enjoy it as much.
So I just hang in sPVP and WvW these days.
