To clarify, I've had a relatively successful writing/editing career, but I'm by no means Stephen King. However, only a tiny percent of writers and editors actually can support themselves full time. Almost all of them have to take second jobs, either teaching, or lecturing or even waiting tables. It's tough out there for writers.
In the end though, it's a crappy industry anyway, and after writing in a genre I didn't enjoy for a longer time than I should have, I hung it up, not because I wasn't doing well, but because I felt like I'd sold out. The stuff I wanted to write didn't sell nearly as well as the stuff I didn't want to.
In the end, it was a matter of trying to preserve what little artistic integrity I had left. Just setting the record straight.
