I might re-roll a toon this weekend. Maybe two. But with my previous testing classes, I've leveled rather choppy. The quests in the area for my level aren't really enough. The gathering doesn't boost me too much either. Any suggestions?

Don't limit yourself to your starting area. On all 4 of my toons, (80 mesmer, 80 thief, 18 ranger, 19 Guardian) I completed their start area to 100% by lvl 11-13. Thankfully I'm not crazy enough to try to do the next area up instead I just jump into town then over to LA and then to another races town and another races starting area. Gives me easy to do hearts and events to keep lvling me up and with dynamic events always cycling through keeps things interesting for me even when I've done the zones on another toon.
If that's not enough for you, well jump into WvW you'll get a good amount of xp just roaming around caping things in a zerg or you could try to venture out solo and cap guard posts or kill supply yaks. Decent xp and coin for doing it too.

The easiest way to get to Lion's arch (besides using the asura portal in your hometown) is to either join a WvW map (press B ingame and join one of the four maps; at the spawnpoint in the WvW maps there is always an Asura Portal to lions Arch) or to join the sPVP lobby "The Mists" (there is also a portal to Lion's Arch).
i select the PvP icon, go to the mists and the LA portal is right there infront of you. When you get to LA your surrounded by the WvW portals so its the other ring of portals you need to jump to to tele to your hometown of choice. Saves a small fortune on travel fees. Crafting is in no way a good way to speed level unless you happen to have a shed load of mats to hand to max out a few but i got one of my alts upto 400 cooking before it had even stepped out of town so is worth doing a little on alts your not currently playing. If you can handle the storage, cooking is pretty quick and easy to level, i have 1 at 400 and 3 other chars not too far away and not playing anywhere near as many hours as i used to (not a reflection of enjoyment of the game, not playing anything else atm, just busy with more important things irl)
