I started with 5, one from each race as well.

    Human - Thief
    Asura - Engineer
    Sylvari - Elementalist
    Charr - Guardian
    Norn - Warrior

It was just my preference. I would use your own as well. I've been taking turns leveling them up and it's been a blast. I love all their storylines.

Ranger and Warrior are the easy one to play, start with those two any race and have fun

Human as what I see is the most popular...I like the Sylvari Necromancer and the Norn Guardian but thats why they gave 5 slots to begin with so you can try each race...either way you will like all there story lines anyway
Let your plans be dark and as impenetratable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.

I still don't understand why human is so popular. Maybe I just have residual dislike of humans from WoW since I always played horde. Anyway in this game, I recommend playing several characters at once for a while. Insist on getting each to to ten or so... unless one of them is just too fun and then you've found your match! This game is a great experience.

Some of my opinions: Human, Charr, and Norn stories are all pretty bland. The Asura have great stories, but their starter zone is BY FAR the worst. Sylvari don't resemble elves to me at all; they are very unique and I really like them and their stories. I'd recommend anything but Asura or Norn to start with.

It is largely a matter of personal taste to be honest. Just don't start with an Elementalist until they get their buffs~.

Thief's are so why not be a Thief?
I see their pain. On some level I even understand their pain. I just can't feel their pain.

Its purely psychological... every game with a Human option will always have a larger number of such than anything else purely because, as humans, we the gamers can more easily connect with and thus live through the character if its human... this is also why most men create men as their primary characters, while women create women.

I have a blast with mixing and matching. You will quickly find what you do and dont like. One major aspect of GW2 is the jumping puzzles. They add alot to the game. check out some of the epic and tragic experiences with these.
