Call of Duty can be a lot of fun, but it can also be extremely elitist, as its popularity brings all kinds and thus the community is less than cheerful. I was a CoDhead from 2008 until just recently, starting with CoD4 early in 2008. ITs actually one of the many things that pulled me away from the original Guild Wars. That said, the game is infested with Hackers on both consoles and PC, so I imagine it could be difficult to get into if you hadn't been playing befor the engine was cracked (which is a big reason as to why I've left CoD behind, since they will need to completely change the engine to fix the hacks at this point, and Activision refuses to do that), so if you're looking for a multiplayer game, avoiding CoD is probably a good idea... that said, if you're in it for the single player campaigns, then there is nothing I could recommend more than the Modern Warfare trilogy.

As far as multiplayer goes... a lot of people will say you should play Battlesfield 3, but I disagree. It is very team intensive, and unless you have a group of people you are familiar with, the game just falls apart with people not willing to work together. And this extends to the Bad Company titles, as well. Both of the new Medal of Honor games are kinda lame, but at least offer an in between of the CoD run and gun and Battlefield tactical play types, plus the first one is pretty cheap, so you might give that a go.

I notice Borderlands has been mentioned... I've never played them myself, but I have a few PSN friends who love both games. Plus they are FPSRPGs, so you may really enjoy that... and if you wanted to go further in the FPSRPG genre and don't care about multiplayer, try Fallout 3.

That's all I can really say on the matter, unless you have an N64, then I would say you should just go get a few friends and play some Goldeneye splitscreen.

Quake Live is free, browser-based, requires very very little from your system specs (you could run this on a toaster). It doesn't have a huge following like it used to, it's quite niche now and doesn't get many new players so you'll most likely get absolutely stomped by the veterans that don't want to let it die. It's a difficult game to just pick up and play but no shooter I have ever played comes close to it, the physics are amazing.

Oh, just had a thought... Star Wars: Jedi Academy (also known as Star Wars: Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy to those of us who played the entire series, lol) was a fun one... it was 3PS lightsaber play, but any and all gun play was FPS, as the series was the big Star Wars FPS franchise.

They're kinda old, but the whole series is actually really good if you're a Star Wars fan, as all the games center around Kyle Katarn, and the essential role he has played behind the scenes since the original movie (the first level of the first game is actually you/him stealing the plans to the Death Star, lol).

Dark Forces was DOS based, so I don't know if you could find a copy to play, but I'm sure there are ways (if you have a PS3, its available on the PSN in the PS Classics section since it was later ported to the PS1). Jedi Knight had arguably the best story (and the best cutscenes since they were all live action), and introduced saber battle, as the story revolved around you discovering your Jedi ancestry... it also had a great expansion about Mara Jade and Kyle's fall. Jedi Outcast, amongst other things, was about Kyle dealing with the fallout from that expansion. And finally, Jedi Academy was about your wholely original character learning from Kyle at the academy.

Jedi Academy clearly had the best mechanics, but it was also very 3PS heavy as your primary weapon was your lightaber, so it felt less like an FPS than the others, since the games were essentially both since the second entry thanks to the lightsaber 3PS gameplay... but yeah.

Left 4 Dead 2 was my first FPS ever, and it was a ton of fun, when playing with friends. Playing alone was boring for me. I also played Team Fortress 2 and it was also a hell of a lot of fun.

Since you like mmo's, I'd go with fallout new Vegas. There is alot more depth with builds and classes than your standard sci-fi fps. They have a cool VATS targetting system that allows you to shoot at a specific body part. If you shoot the guy in the arm he drops his weapon, leg cripples him, etc. VATS also slows down time temporarily and you dont have to aim the shot. Although at least half the time you cant use VATS because you dont have enough energy. The more points you put into VATS the more you can use it. Might help if you get frustrated with having to manually aim on the run.

You can make your own ammo too if you want. It came out a few years ago. Fallout 3 came out before Fallout New Vegas but they were both very fun. I'd go with New Vegas.
