There is, if you're doing dungeons or WvW that scales you. Being undergeared for you level will be made even worse when scaling happens. It's just how it works. For that, you want gear as close to your level as possible.

I gained half my levels in WvW and jumped into explorables at 80 with like half my gear being 60-75 blues and one rare 72 weapon, said "eff the system" and got all my exotics. Now I look like Dante, but with tits.

If you really want to gear up then do it. I found that I never needed to, I never really struggled with anything. Dungeons, DE's, personal story quests, etc. If you're having trouble and gear upgrades will help you there's no reason not to do it. Especially since the global economy thing is backfiring pretty bad so far and greens for most level ranges are dirt-cheap.

You didn't struggle because you're an OP thief. No, I don't gear up my guardian properly for WvW either (or dungeons...) but it really does have an impact. Guardians are also OP as hell though so it doesn't really matter, rofl.

I am extremely skilled. I press one key to kill everything with both of my weapon sets. And then an additional key in explorable modes to keep everything perma-blinded so that you with your barely dressed-self wont get hurt.

Any other actions I do are purely for style.

i usually just equip what i find while leveling, but if i go out into wvw, or a dungeon i will usually go to the wvw zone and replace the low level armor with gear from the karma equipment trader. I usually have plenty of karma and get the cheapest ones, blue i think, no use wasting any more karma than that. ill just be upgrading it again in a few levels anyway.
