Thread: What caster should I play?

  1. #11
Sorry, no experience with mesmers at all past like ... level 5. Lol. Eles do well in melee with D/D, however, so long as you (again) don't try to glass cannon it. You can output solid, consistent damage, and it's by far my favorite playstyle. Don't listen to the people who say it can't be used in WvW, either; it totally can as long as you learn your limits -- which takes practice/trial and error -- and learn when to GTFO, even in larger clashes. It does take might stacking so you don't hit like a wet noodle and a lot of practice and micromanagement, though.

You seem to really like the necro flavor, so that would be my ultimate recommendation. With GW2 you can make any class fit any role you want for the most part, though not in exactly the same way.

Yeah. I'm loving my necro. He's Lv.12 already. Started him yesterday and have been having a blast. I want to tank with him though. I feel he can talk efficiently with the AoE seals and whatnot.

I'm gonna have him as my main and probably a warrior alt.

"Tanking" in the traditional sense doesn't really happen in GW2, keep in mind. You can do it for short periods on many classes, but you're not gonna just eat hits from the big boss consistently -- you just can't, many mechanics one-shot if you don't dodge and they still hit like a truck with other skills.

You can be tanky, though, in the sense of having high health/mitigation. Just don't take the meaning any further than that.

I'm happy to hear that you like the Necro class! It's my second favorite (next to Bomb Engineer). You asked about the Mesmer class - that's a fun class as well, and one of the best PVP classes from what I hear. In any case, I'm glad that you found a class that you enjoy!

You asked if the mesmer is good in melee. As long as you're mobile and you're willing to put some points into toughness, I think so. I particularly like sword/torch, though a lot of people like sword/pistol.

Alright. My necromancer is my main I'm just trying to decide what to make my central alt, like the alt I switch to the most. I'd like something melee but still has SOME range. I was thinking either mesmer, ranger or warrior.

Point's into toughness is completely optional IMO, as that trait line tends to be more effective for staff users overall, so going more then 10 into the line will start diminishing its effectiveness.

The main point Vayne hit on, is being mobile. Hit and move, is going to keep you alive.

Sword / Pistol = Highest consistent damage Phantasm
Sword / Sword = Second highest damage, with a defensive block.
Sword / Torch = Fair damage and stacks Confusion; gives an extra stealth for those who desire more sneakiness.
Sword / Focus = Horrid phantasm for most fights (pve or pvp), but the only weapon that we get a speed boost with.

Each secondary will have other pros/cons to them, but that's them in a nut shell. It should be noted some of the weapons can have other interesting uses. (Focus for example is great in WvW for pulling people off walls). So experiment for yourself and see which fits your play style best.

My main is a Necro lvl 20...there great when your facing mobs and yes you can summon pets, mele is pretty good I use dagger and horn and it gets the job done... Overall I think there very versatile as spellcasters and my favorite out of the three
Let your plans be dark and as impenetratable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.
