Thread: US Presidential Election

    US Presidential Election

The time is near, so US citizens cast your vote for the lesser of two evils tomorrow! Happy lever pulling!

Personally I'm voting for the guy I like and not for that other guy that is a liar and whose party if full of stinky doodie heads. Those other guys twist facts and undermine the good people of American for their own personal gain while my guys are trying to do the best they can in a broken system.

Once again, I penciled in Alfred E. Neuman before I mailed in my card. One day, I am sure he will win!

Seriously, when I bring up the idea of a Parlament to my friends they look at me like I grew an extra head. They've always had a two party system so they don't even question it. When I ask them WHY it has to be a two party system and why has it remained a two party system all this time they don't have a good answer. Because they don't undersand they're gullible sheep, being gullible sheep and all.

I have the same question honestly. I just don't get why it only has to be those 2 parties.. I mean.. there is actually 6 parties being represented for the presidency but why do we only focus on 2.. It really baffles me.

At least a two party system creates clear majorities that should help getting legislation through parliament. here in austria we have 5 parties currently in parliament. the largest of them has about 30 percent. and not surprisingly they get little done in the governing coalition. no party can do what they promised because the other party's view is entirely different. so they quarrel a lot and in the end reach some foul compromise with which neither party is happy.

So don't think that having more relevant parties would necessarily improve things. but at least you have more choice. not that it matters. but still

Another thing that has always filled me with wonder, is the US system of electors. Why not simply count all the votes in the country? Right now, if more than half of the people in some very big state vote for one party, then all the electors for that state will be assigned to that one party. From there on it's irrelevant what all the other people in that state voted. So basically, the votes of a few million people in one state are irrelevant, while the votes of a few thousand people in another state may be crucial. Why is Mary in Ohio more important than Lena in Florida?
Especially when an election is as close as this one, it shouldn't just be the "swing states" that determine who is the winner... it should be the entire American population.

You say that as though it's a good thing. All it really does is ensure that lots of legislation is passed against the wishes of the voters, often with support from both parties.

Actual vital legislation will pass regardless because... you know... it's vital. The rest shouldn't have been passed in the first place.
