Thread: building a gaming laptop? or just bite the bullet and go back to PC

  1. #11
How much ram is enough? 8gb or 16gb? Do I make sure and get the 1600 or is 1333 ok?

8GB of 1600 as long as the motherboard supports it.
If you are not overclocking (i wouldn't bother) you should not be getting a i5-xxxxK procesor (ex: i5-3750k), but instead the i5-3450.
spend $250 or more on the graphics card.

Ok I am looking at EVGA GeForce GTC 670 2g video card $359 minus $10 discount
    8g ram corsair vengeance 1600 $39.99
Intel Motherboard $99, Intel core i5-3550 $209.99 minus $15 rebate
I have motherboard, cpu, gpu, ram, power supply and case for $768.94
I have a friend who works at Microsoft who can get me the OS system (you recommend going with Windows 7 even though I am sure he will push me to use 8)

I am sure there will be some things like fans I am missing but hopefully not too much more.

    I really appreciate everyones help!

Windows 8!!!! Its 7 with some cutsey changes. Why pay full price for the old OS?

Intel Mobos are fine but I am going to veto the idea. Look for an ASRock, ASUS, or Gigabyte Z77 board. The GTX 670 is a fantastic choice! Make sure your power supply isnt a piece of garbage? What is it? make and model. It should have an 80 plus certification. Don't buy any higher than like 550W you don't need a huge power supply. (quality over quantity) your system will prbly use 375W at most.

Ok friend that can build them said he has this video card and it is awesome. My quote did not include a HD so this is the complete system and 16g ram. Can you tell me what you think of it? It has the ASUS motherboard and he has Windows 7 to install for me!

Already did the one I linked from PC partpicker will give better performance and includes a SSD ready to overclock the processor wich will give alot better performance in gaming. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mLZt
Video cards compaired perty much the same till the AA

With the SSD you will get about a 12 second boot time on your PC and overclocking the processor to about 4.2 or so will make a big diferance in large events and WVW

I have no idea what overclocking is and one of the other posters said not to bother with it. I am not a power gamer I am very casual, probably won't join a guild and will solo 90% of the time unless folks are around doing an event or I can talk some of my EQ friends into playing. My be unlikely though since the game is a beast for graphics and most of my friends have older computers.
