So recently I spent 100G on the commander tag and now I realize I get soooo frustrated organizing people and seeing them mishandle things, that I don't really feel like putting it on. Now I'm kinda wishing I had that money back and I wasn't so broke again.

You're not alone in this. One of my guildies bought a commander tag too. He really enjoys WvW. The problem is, he can see what's going on and understands why things have to be done, but others can't. You having a blue symbol over your head isn't going to make others better players or smarter. Many don't read map chat and many don't have a clue. I'm probably one of them.

Though when I'm in WvW, I'm usually in mumble with one of the guys who do have a clue and I listen. But like you everyone out there paid for their game and they're entitled to play it any way they want. No one is obligated to follow you. Sucks, but there you are.

The random commanders on my server, well I guess they're not that random, but usually when one is in WvW they just tell the zerg to follow them. Constantly saying "Everyone follow me" "Everyone meet me here" "everyone get to X supply camp and grab supplies. We move in 45 seconds" and everyone meaning people that aren't in mumble in small groups doing other tactics.

But they constantly project where they are and where they're going in /m. It's almost spam, but not quite. It's really the only way to get as many people as possible to pay attention that aren't already doing something useful.

Dunno if that helps or not, might already be doing that. Servers aren't the same obviously.

Most of the comments here describing PvP or WvW situations show quite nicely why I don't play competitive online games.

What in particular do you find troubling?

The MMO world is dominated by nerds with too much time in their hands and rather badly formed personalities.
Grievers who like to take out their testosterone angst on newbs on the internet. People who take these games far too seriously because that's all they have going on in their lives.

Ganging up on newbs is surely the internet's favourite pastime.
