Never been a fan... Mesmer was an okay second profession for Assassins in GW1, but I never bothered with them otherwise after a short stint on a character I made and deleted shortly thereafter. With GW2, I didn't even give the class a second look.

.....Never let modern day travesties harm the memory of greatness.
Well, I've made 7 characters so far. One of every single class, EXCEPT mesmer. I'll get around to it eventually.
Mesmer was last on my list of profession order. Even after beta, it wasn't on my radar. After levelling a guardian and engineer to 80 I started a warrior and a thief but just didn't click with either one. Too many friends were playing ele's. I decided to mess around with a mesmer "just for fun" and it became my 3rd level 80 and my main.
I had no idea there were so many Mesmer fans. I've only really ever heard people say how much they hate Mesmers. Odd... =/
If you haven't given them a try, I would suggest doing so. As I said earlier, I normally wouldn't even think about them. But now, it's my 2nd favorite character. Well... for now. I started an ele, but couldn't get it out of the intro. DC'd too much, and haven't been on it since. I'll find out later =)
Haha. Most of the hate I hear for Mesmers is when my guild mates are in WvW and they kill a clone after it's down only to have the real Mesmer pop up behind them and kill them. There's a lot of "Freakin' Mesmers!" in our vent channel on WvW nights.
I'm getting pretty good at being the mesmer that inspires such curses.
Mesmers have always had a huge fan following, even in Guild Wars 1. And just as many people who despise them, I think. But if you followed some of the older forums, there were so many people waiting for that last profession to be announced, ready to burn down Anet headquarters if it wasn't a mesmer...you have to remember, all the other original professions in Guild Wars weren't all that original. Mesmer was like Anet's contribution to the fantasy genre. I'd say it's the iconic Guild Wars profession.
And man, it has a ton of fans. I'm one of them. My main in Guild Wars 1 ended up being a mesmer, and it seems that's likely going to happen here too, though I've leveled a ranger and an engie to 80.
