They're starting off with a ring and a backpack. You don't know how much of a difference that will even make. In fact, I'm pretty sure, it's not going to make much of a different if you actually do the math.
The ring is taking the existing upgrade slot and including it. How much better is it than an exotic ring with an upgrade gem, which the new gear cant' take. It can only take infusion which won't affect WvW at all.
I'm not so sure this is the same thing people think it is. It might be, but I think it's not. If they introduce into WvW ways to get the ring and back piece before they add more items, it's probably not a big deal at all.
It is, however, a big deal in a lot of people's minds.
See here's the thing about progression. If one person in the group has the items, then no. It wont make that big of an impact. However, if the ENTIRE group has them? It will make a BIG impact. That's why raiders push to get every upgrade they can in any way they can, even if it's a small upgrade. Because if all 10/25 people have that small upgrade, it can make the difference between a clear and a wipe in the early stages of a new tier.
This is how I feel as well, for the first time since the game came out I have had no desire to play because the thought of getting on another gear treadmill sickens me. I'm undecided if this will end up making me quit or not but it definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
In WvW? I completely disagree with this. In any event, I'm still not sure it's better. What's the difference between in exotic with the very best slot upgrade and the new ring or backpack? Is there really a different. If 10 people have a 1% difference, they still have to play better than the other side to win...and that's assuming the difference is the same difference. Everyone has different buffs from foods, from guilds, from WvW itself, it's just not that cut and dried.
WvW was never supposed to have a level playing field and it doesn't, even now. I'm not so sure this is going to be a major deal. But I'm also not saying it won't be. I'm just keeping an open mind until I see it in action. Then I'll start screaming. Screaming before I see it is simply premature.
Well WvW is already really weird as is with scaled up lowbies being mostly cannon fodder. If an entire WvW guild of 80's all have the upgraded items those small increases will inevitably make a difference. If you paid attention to competitive video games you'd know how important small increases and victories are and how much of an impact they make on the outcome of a match(maybe you do, but it doesn't seem like it). And since this is only the beginning of better items, it's just going to get more and more mandatory if you're playing at the peak of competition.
ArenaNet really needs to stop being dumb and tell us everything about the new system. There's just too much room for speculation on both sides of the argument, they need to come clean and tell us exactly what's going to happen. Not say "Look a new tier of items! More news about it soon!"
The thing is most people who WvW aren't die hard WvW'ers. There are some, but they're not most people in WvW. My guild goes into WvW fairly regularly. Today we had a group of 15. Do you think most people specced for it, paid particularly attention to upgrades or buffs? Nope. And we still kicked ass by being smart. Avoiding zergs, knowing when to run. We ended off the day by taking a tower after hour of hit and run on smaller targets.
There are bigger grouips arranged against us and we took most of them down. We died a few times, but in general, we did much better than we took.
And none of us are doing anything special. A single guild with everyone upgraded will probably due well until the meet a zerg bigger than they are, with arrow carts already in place.
You're right, that's true. And I agree. But it's still going to have a negative impact on people that are really into it. I really have a bad feeling that it's going to turn into why you hated raiding in Rift. Guilds badgering members to go do PVE so you can be the best you can be in WvW. Limiting recruitment on the servers that are extremely competitive (like mine) and demanding their gear is up to par, which I know some of them already do. But it wasn't that big of a deal since there are so many ways to gain exotics.
Like I said before. I hope I'm wrong. I hope it all turns out fine and in the end it helps the game. But this whole thing feels like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.
Even if there's an infinitismal advantage, guilds might do that. But then I'd never join that type of guild. And I wouldn't run one.
I don't think this is the end of the world. I do think it's a change. The question is, are more people going to embrace this change, than object to it. That's really the only question. Well over 2 million people have bought Guild Wars 2. What any ten or even twenty percent are asking for is going to be lost in what thirty to forty percent are asking for. This would be the same with any game.
Those who feel lied to will leave, the same way I left Rift. As long as more people stay and come onboard, it's the right decision from a business point of view.
Will I stay? That depends on how it plays out over the long term. I suspect it won't be a big deal, but some people are going to leave over this.
Oh I know, I'm more than aware. But saying one thing and then doing another doesn't reflect well for them as a company in general. Especially when they're going against some of the major selling points they advertised of the game.
The stat gain, no matter how big or small is irrelevant. Honestly, the damage has already been done. Even if it turns out to be a well built and thought out system and nothing like any of us are speculating. People are still going to look at ArenaNet and go "lol, and they said there'd only be cosmetic differences in gear and not statistical ones".
