lol double posting. I just realized.
"In the storyline of Guild Wars, Ascension was a rite that players had to go through in order to gain the Gift of True Sight, which allowed them to see and fight the mursaat."
.... So basically ...
So people don't have to worry about GW2 turning into WoW, because it's REALLY turning into Zelda!? Which is perfect, because I mean I've got all the necessary dyes for every tunic already. Wooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, but I'm a forest guy, not a tree guy. That is to say I take everything the company says, and I draw conclusionis from it. Based on what the company said, I knew pretty much what the personal story was going to be. Not by analyzing every word of every quote, but by taking them all together.
You wonder why I don't have quotes to back up my stuff like you do? Because I know when people answer interviews, they're going to say things that not only can be misconstrued but that are actually wrong because changes happen all the time in games. What Colin was saying in that clip was that there are many different combinations of things that make each character's story different. So that if you and I both play characters, even human warriors, and then we read back the stories at the end, your story and mine, the odds are we're going to have completely different stories. But they were always going to funnel us into killing Zhaitan. In fact I'm sure they talked about that in one of the interviews I read.
Guys who pick apart individual words used by anyone and then replying to those words are like lawyers. They arguing the meaning of this and the meaning of that. And too often justice gets lost in the details.
Leaving aside the issue of vertical progression and gear grind and just looking at the personal story, from what they said over the long course, they delivered, pretty much exactly what they said they would. And I know this because when started playing, I got pretty much what I expected. In some ways, in fact, it was better than I expected. So I have no idea where you're coming from with personal story.
Where you do have a more legitimate point is the vertical progression issue, which I see as a decision they felt they had to make and then I have to judge is the game still worth it to me after that change. And yes, it was a change. They changed from having a clear gear cap to not having one.
I still think, and will probably continue to think, that vertical progression does not have to equal a grind for gear...if it's done right. Will Anet do it right? Don't know. My crystal ball is in the shop. But I do know that I'm going to give them that chance to try.
But picking a line from an interview and then interpreting it one way, when there are thousands of other lines to consider from other interviews that say other things that you're not taking into account?
Your complaints about the personal story are trivial, particularly in the light of the fact that no MMO's personal story has more paths or alternatives, ie more to do, than Guild Wars 2.
On the topic of personal story being soloable...I'm not sure I disagree with this. While I understand soloing Zhaitan would have been less epic than having an army arrayed against him, I have several issues with how this was handled. I feel the same way about dungeons in general.
I'm supposed to be this great hero, the second in command of the pact. But when I enter Arah and watch a cut scene, there's only a 1 in 5 chance my character appears in that scene. That, to me, is more game breaking than anything else in the personal story. If this is "your" story and you're the second in command, you should see yourself in those final, pivotal scenes. Not showing you means it's no longer your story but someone else's. If you're pugging Arah, then you're actually seeing a complete stranger for the first time getting all the credit.
The other thing Anet has really dropped the ball on is the home instance, which I consider largely a waste. I'm sure they have plans for it, but basically it does very little for the game. On sure, on some Sylvari stories I've done, people I've helped have moved into my home instance, but my interactions with them are pretty much non-existant.
Anet could have done a much better job with the home instance.
What they did to a beautiful job on is the world. If you explored it to 100% and you're bored, the world still hasn't changed. If you are only interested in loot and you are only interested in gold obviously there are less reasons to go back through the world. And since that covers a LOT of people, I would say that Anet has some work to do in giving people reasons to return to earlier zones. This is a legitimate issue.
But the whole company lied to us thing, that's getting a bit old. The company said stuff and stuff changed. That's not a lie.
Do Norns have a "Home Instance"? I know on my human where that is and remember from early on, but on my Norn I don't ever remember doing anything in a "Home Instance"?
Vayne, just a final reply in this thread to let you know that I've had enough of this discussion. You're the only one left that I'm talking to, and I've come to realize that it's pointless.
You keep belittling my views and my quotes, basically stating that I look for specific "words" and twist their meanings, or that I try to find that one quote that conflicts with everything else they said, and then call them out on that one. I can come up with more and more paragraphs that state the same thing, from different interviews and blog posts (while I can't find a single quote that says the opposite), but that's not going to change a thing... you will keep stating that my opinion is misguided, that you know better, and that I am wrong.
And it's great to say that there are "thousands of other lines to consider from other interviews that say other things" while in the same post admitting that you "don't have quotes to back up my stuff". So basically, we're no longer argueing about the facts, but about your interpretation of the facts. That's proven pointless, and I have better things to do than spend my time on that.
The truth is I remember reading stuff, but not where I've read it. And I don't really care to sit and research it, not because it wasn't said, but because it's just another quote anyway. In your mind contradictory to your quote. And it doesn't even matter, because your mind was made up a while back anyway, you've become increasingly frustrated with the game for a while now.
The bottom line for me is that this ENTIRE conversation is pointless and has been since the beginning. You don't like the game, leave and play another game. You want to believe you were lied to, be lied to. It's not important enough for me to spend time researching words here and there, because I have better things to do with my time.
I disagree with you, because I think you've become jaded and you want to justify walking away. That's my belief, whether it's true or not. Psychology is a weird and wonderful thing.
But I don't believe for one second Anet lied to you. I know there were definitely conversations where it was said that the storylines would merge, but I have no interest in digging the up, particularly because some of them might have been in videos, or audio and it's just too time consuming. I don't have stuff like this indexed. I don't have an easy way to find the quotes I'm looking for.
It makes you look very much like you have the facts on your side, but in reality, this is not enjoyable enough for me TO do the research to prove you wrong. I know what I heard/saw/read, but finding it again? Not my cup of tea.
So enjoy the idea that you have the facts on your side, if that's what makes you feel better. What you have is an opinion that's no better than anyone else's. Mine isn't either, btw.
I don't want to take sides, but you're being kind of cold. I know I've said over and over that people need to just quit instead of complain, but they have every right to be pissed because ArenaNet said things in interviews and went back on it.
Actually, it reminds me a lot of Peter Molyneux blabbing up a storm about how great Fable was going to be and all these crazy things he had planned for that game. Plants that grow in real time and seasons that change depending on the actual date IRL.
ArenaNet REALLY doesn't want to be Peter Molyneux. I mean no one does haha. But they sound a lot like him now that I stop and think about it.

It's not about being pissed or not being pissed. Things are stated that are stated in such a way that exaagerates what's been or not being said. People who say they went back on the manifesto, because of gear grind, for example, are simply wrong.
As for kind of cold, well, Centaur keeps telling me I'm wrong, when in fact, I know what I heard. He has the patience to look up every quote, or he has an index of them, which is great. But that doesn't mean he has right on his side, all the time. It means he has the patience to look up quotes. His implication that I don't have fact on my side because I don't want to waste my time finding a quote in an interview is at best misguided. It's like he's saying, I have quotes so I'm right. Well, it certainly means he's more organized than I am.
The funny bit is, I've had this very convo before with him, when we used to agree. He's look up quotes and I'd say it's a good thing he's around, because I don't have the patience to do that. He KNOWS I don't want to troll through stuff to find quotes. And as long as I was agreeing with him, that was perfectly fine.
Well the situation hasn't really changed, except that he's now changed his tune...I haven't actually changed mine. But Centaur well knows I have no intention of sitting and researching quotes from prior discussions I've had with him. To now go and say he has fact, and I have fiction, which he never said before when I agreed with him, shows to me at very least a bad memory, but I'm more inclined to think that he wants to be "right".
Well he's not right, he has an opinion. Cold or not, he knows I don't research stuff, and why and he still chose to go there.
