Especially if it's MMOs. I want to play with my friends, after all. And despite my massive campaign, no more than 5 people checked out GW2 and all of them dropped out after 2-4 weeks. And I'm done, too. This game has nothing to offer after the initial graphics rush. I could go on about the reasons, but none of you is interested.
And I won't be coming back. ANet had their chance with me, they blew it. Just like Bioware did. I have paid my money, I have gotten my money's worth of playtime in the game and I wish Tyria all the best, but I doubt not that even if they changed it to my liking I wouldn't return.
Well I have to admit I did try out SWTOR, after level 31 I quit since it was certainly not worth the effort. It lacked many common MMO features and the classes were not balanced. Months later a few of my work friends that did get to the "end game" in SWTOR let me know that there simply was not one worth playing and that class imbalance made the game unplayable.
As for GW2 while I can relate to this opinion I am still actually holding out a little hope. It does seem like Anet is working on an "end game" however the class I decided to play as my main is not among those that are working "as intended". I'm talking about Rangers, gotta love sitting in Lions Arch spamming "80 Ranger looking for AC/CM EXP or Fractals 3+" every 20 minutes or so and not getting any bites. I am averaging 1 group a day for Fractuals. Does not help that my game client has crashed a few times during runs and by the time I get back on I am dumped from group.
The balance issues with Rangers is pretty bad. The pets die almost instantly in Dungeons, the utility skills are sub-par, and weapon damage is abysmal. Warriors and Thief's just do it better.
The thing that hurts the most is that promised fixes never appeared.
The fact that I took my ranger to 80 and managed to get him exotic weapons and at least rare armor should tell you that I find the game more entertaining then SWTOR, I never made even 1 character make max level there. The question will be: How long will I hang around (and other non-fan players). For me, another few months and if Rangers are not fixed, new game.
You might say "hey its F2P so it don't matter how long you actually play". Wrong... less people play = less game activity = eventual game demise.
I am not raging or quitting because of the gear grinds. However, I am not going to participate in this because of the gating it causes and how it feels like endgame, which is something I despise. The big sell for me with this game was no endgame.
If Anet continues going along this path, I will go as far as I can without participating in this and eventually leave the game when my lack of gear keeps me from playing in world to start another... and eventually leave that one when I get to endgame.
Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll... The only way this is a gear grind is if you..
A. Want to go as far down the rabbit hole for the Fractals as you can
B. Play WvW and don't want the Legendaries that will make you equal to Ascended gear
Otherwise.. you are greatly Not effected by this.
New map just added for New End Game content.. No Ascended gear needed. New PVP Map added.. No Ascended Gear needed. If you play daily and are still lvling up and doing your story mode and just playing the game.. No Ascended gear needed.
Everyone is taking this and just running.. and the wrong way. It's technically a gear grind yes, like the other dungeons are too if you want those dungeon gear looks, but it's all optional. The true powerful gear is legendary, and that's what i was since day 1.
It did change. Legendary stats were equal to exotic stats. Everyone who has exotic gear, was at max stat (very, very few people actually have legendary gear, but there was no stat difference). Now there is exotic - ascended - legendary, and getting max stat gear requires a considerable grind (even if you only go for ascended and not legendary). And why? Nobody knows.

It did not change.. Legendary was and still is the highest stats available. Just because a majority of people don't want to go through the long steps of gathering and crafting their way to a Legendary piece of gear does not negate the fact that that still is the best gear in the game. It was and always will be.
ANET clearly said why they did this. The people who were running dungeons non stop and gear grinding those exotic gear pieces were feeling like that aspect of the game was lacking. They voiced their opinion..greatly. ANET then decided that in order to make future dungeons difficult and also add something shiny for the dungeon people to go for, well add in a gear class that will have an interchangeable part that can be adapted for future dungeons.
This effectively kills 2 birds with one stone. You can help silence those Dungeon Raiders with new dungeons with new gear and with new motivation. You also can incorporate a gear type that has a variable that will make future expansions better and difficult at the same time.
The only reason why I stick my two sense in, is because I don't want to see threads like this make or break a decision by an "on the fence" type player. Or even to see cattle follow the ideas of some and just stop playing. People who are disgruntled tend to voice their opinions far more then the people who are happy. That's just the facts.
If you are playing this game just to have fun, nothing has changed. If you are getting butt hurt over the game... well move on.
Interesting, this post actually makes me pause for a minute and question my view of the game and the majority of the player-base which seems to have come from GW1 which I have never played.
Is the Guild Wars old time playerbase anti-competitive play? Is the community mostly solo play and crafting/explorer play centric?
I think the vast majority of players from all other MMOs are group minded. To them anything less then a 5 or 6 person group playing experience is just not going to satisfy them.
Anyways very interesting point, one I missed I think for the last few months!
