PhotoDNA and why it's potentially bad.

Microsoft announced that PhotoDNA will be packaged with Windows 8, and it's advertised purpose is to stop child pornography (good declared to the public intentions, however...) However, what do you think it will really be used for? I never trusted the cloud when I first heard about it, and, surprise! Stories come out of people who store their data onto the cloud and no longer have access to it! SkyDrive in particular is notorious and they publicly state they highly value their users' privacy, but if that were the case then how would they know anything that violated ToS was in there in the first place? And why should we assume that it was bad stuff the consumers who paid for the service had there instead of violating some arcane copyright law whose only existence is expanding corporate power?

Those who exchange liberty for security deserve neither, and isn't Chris Hanson doing a good enough job busting creeps? The FBI and even CIA have countless resources they use to go after those who supply wares that involve harming children. The site is based in a foreign country? Have a CIA agent pose as an IT specialists and mess with servers or a programmer and worm their servers down and make it look like the competition sent the worm. This doesn't involve violating decent people's privacy or Microsoft Trojan Horsing people with PhotoDNA and other wares under the pretext of protecting children.

I don't trust Microsoft to be more responsible than the government, not that I trust the government...

It is too hard to tell what would qualify...what if I am 18 or older and dress younger for Halloween and then post a slightly provocative photo to be seen only by a lover?

I've actually seen nothing but performance improvement since the upgrade to Windows 8. Besides, it's only 30 bucks to upgrade right now, so it's not like you're losing much on it if you don't like it. If you kept up with your old keys you can always downgrade back to whatever version you're on now. The last time I took a bet like that was on this game, and it came with a price tag 5 times as much(I'm a CE nut, so it was that or nothing). That gamble has paid off pretty darn well for me so far.

That said I don't use SkyDrive or any cloud based storage other than Dropbox and Box since they're free and convenient for my gaming group. And even then I'm not dumb enough to use it for anything that could potentially cause trouble. Not that I do anything that could cause trouble, but if I did I certainly wouldn't store it in "the cloud." I'm one of those crazies who backs up his stuff to two data drives and mails one to someone across the country to hold onto in case something happens.

I am with you, not on the archaic archive method, but on cloud storage. All of my photos are stored on a net app in my house. I can share them with people, but I maintain complete control of everything on my end.
