Alexrediculous did a nice video series detailing each class and their play style. Just a fair warning, some are NSFW due to language, but they are really informative and entertaining.

    Thief
    Ranger
    Necromancer
    Warrior
    Mesmer
    Engineer
    Guardian
    Elementalist

I have to admit, that due to these videos I am now torn between the warrior, engineer and necro as my main. Gah, choices....

Guardians can be effective DPS as well. All classes have tons of support, so don't pick it just because of that. I really enjoy support roles too, and I'm going to play more to that style on my ele. CC as support aside, eles have several heals, armor of frost to protect allies, windborn speed to give everyone a speedboost, etc.

And I'm just using ele as an example because it's what I'm most familiar with. Warriors have banners and shouts, engineers have elixers and healing turrets, rangers have beneficial spirits, necros have a ton of condition removal/management, etc.
