Thread: Happy Thanksgiving to all

  1. #11
Well in Britain we don't have Thanksgiving of course, but I hope everyone who does celebrate it has a good one. I was in America for a few months during the time Obama first got elected, and experienced my first (and probably last) Thanksgiving. As much as I enjoyed it, I'm glad we don't have it here, there are already far too many occasions I have to buy people cards and gifts lol.

Is it just Americans and Canadians? I know Canadians have it the 2nd Monday in October, but is it even the same kind of thing? Just curious lol.

Anyhow, I hope everyone, whether it is something you celebrate or not, enjoys the weekend. And remember "Be Excellent To Each Other!"

It's not just canada either. Many cultures have a "thanksgiving" day, because it comes from celebrating a bountiful harvest back in the day. It's just that Americans (and closely followed by canadians) love their holidays and commercializing them. I'm not anti that btw, just narrating.

Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating it, Happy Whateverday, to those who aren't.

I'll just let the turkey fatten up for another month, even more to nom.

I lived in Berkeley for a few years and there they also have "unThanksgiving" which is celebrated the day before Thanksgiving and involves Native Americans gathering and showing pride for their culture and remembering that this was once their land. I found that interesting. I still love to celebrate Thanksgiving and I think of it as a day to be Thanful for everything, but with an emphasis on family.

    Happy Thanks/Unthanks-giving to all!

That's even better because it's like the native Americans are being kicked out of there after their celebration in order to celebrate Thanksgiving.

I know it's sad for them, what happened and everything, but for some reason this strikes me as funny.

It's actually celebrated across the bay in SF. Here's a reference:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unthanksgiving_Day

If you aren't familiar with the bay area, people who live in Berkeley go to SF all the time because it's just the other side of the bridge, so a ten minute drive.

Also, I don't find what you said to be racist or insensitive. It is kinda funny

Here in Europe "Thanksgiving" or something like that is mostly "celebrated" by small kids in school, who learn stuff like where their food comes from an what crops we grow in our country and such. This takes usually place some time in October, if I remember my days in elementary school correctly. Otherwise there's not much heard about that holiday. At least not in our days when farmers only make up for 2 % of our population. I guess 60 years earlier this probably was a bigger festivity. Now I don't even know if there is a specific date on which you're supposed to celebrate Thanksgiving in Europe.

The world is full of pain and sorrow.
Life is fleeting and true moments of joy are few and far between.
Happiness is laced with shards of pain.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Even though who don't celebrate it, maybe you can just take a moment to be thankful for something that you have, such as Guild Wars 2.
