None of us know any numbers, but I'm pretty sure their profit was stellar, especially since both Best Buy and Gamestop employees have told me game sells like mad. Also, I buy gems all the time. I enjoy the cash shop, though would like to see more skins. I was disappointed that some of the skins are for town clothes only, and not for armor. But I bit the bullet a couple weeks ago and finally bought some gems. I got some of those level 80 transmutation stones (so my lower level characters can wear lv 80 skins) and a character slot. I kind of wish I had kept the gems though as I'm sure there will be something cool I'd want during the black Friday sale. But I can't see myself spending any more money right since I just spent some on the game a couple weeks ago. I bet the gold/gem exchange rate for this Friday is going to be insane!

I spent 20 bucks on two extra character slots. But I'm not planning on getting anything else. And none of my friends have purchased anything yet, as they see no use in it.

I didn't specifically mean why now. I meant why not before they caused such a row. If they felt their profits were too meagre, they should have started pushing the gem shop earlier, as that's were the revenue will ultimately come from now that probably almost everybody who will ever buy the game has already done so. They should have tried to put more desirable things in there before pissing off all those who liked the no gear progression thing.
I bought all my storage and bag expansions for my main when gems were going for 24sI also had a little play with dye packs and my experience from them was that i came out even after selling a couple of rares, or ontop if you take into account the ones i used and got for free, unlikely to be the case now gem prices have gone up. I still want a few char slots but in no rush atm, enough to do with what i got still and my alts still need some bags but in no major rush, more concerned with 20 slot bags for them first.
The Nov update was a money making scam? dude your a fool! it was always planned and is only a small part of that plan so be prepared to make more of a fool of yourself in the future.
If anything, while they will also make a few bucks out of it, its a convenient gold sink for the rich.
Will i buy anything this weekend? No! But i'll likely put my hand in my wallet for the first time and treat myself to somet for xmas.
Of course it was planned beforehand, but of course it was also made out of consideration for profit. That kind of stuff doesn't just get thrown out in two weeks (although the somewhat poor implementation of the events did at least give the impression it was that way).
But in the end it's always a monetary decision. They (or certain members of staff) just saw their potential in another approach than the one which has been preached since the day the game was announced. They just didn't have the guts to tell us so, while the game was still under construction. Or, more likely, they assumed that a lot of players wouldn't even have bothered buying it, if the gear treadmill had been announced earlier.
So, in the end it's about money making. I never did call it a scam. I do not feel betrayed or anything. I certainly got my money's worth out of the game and I also saw the game going a bit downhill regarding people being online (of course, only a personal observation). Thus, I'm not really surprised they're trying to keep more players by some update. I was just surprised, like probably all of us, by the direction that update took. Some of you may be fine with it.
I'm fine as long as this will not affect my fun in WvW, because I don't really plan on participating in the updates' content. But when, at some point in the future, this ascended gear, or whatever gear will come after that (because I don't buy into that being the last tier introduced) will become mandatory in a way that you can't have fun in PVP without it anymore, then I'm definitely out of this game. But I wouldn't have spent anything more on that game anyway, as I really got everything I wanted already and therefore I'll probably not be a big loss for the company after all
I might buy some stuff this Fri-Sun at 70% off, depends whats on offer...
Really, I want more and better looking skins. I hope they have a team working on bringing better items to the gemstore!
I don't want pay to win but want stuff that improves my characters appearence, makes them stand out from the crowd. Also, stuff that saves time. Also, I love wizzing about on my broomstick, can we have more, 'mounts' like this?

Buy 25 for 1560. This is a new item. ArenaNet claims: "50% off (was: 3125)"
But note that if they gave the 50% discount on the "5 for 450", as well, you would get 5 for 225, or 25 for 1125.
Compared to that, the discount is only 28%, not 50%. So they used the price per 1, not the price per 5, for that discount. Please be aware of that.
