I started playing GW2 in beta before I even dug into much about it, but I didn't have a problem figuring out how to level or what to do. I actually found it pretty refreshing that they didn't have one of those tutorials in this game leading you by the hand "this is how you move" "this is how you jump" "this is how you talk to an npc" "this is how you find your inventory" etc. I think most games lead people by the hand WAY too much. This game is a refreshing change from that. This game encourages you to find things out for yourself a little more than most games. Figuring things out on your own can be rewarding in and of itself.

Guild Wars 2 needs a better tutorial? I totally disagree. But that's just my opinion and respect your right to have a differing opinion.
Did you play any RPGs that weren't MMOs though?

There are people playing MMOs who never played an RPG before. For that matter, did you play any of the old school MMOs like UO or the original Everquest?

It's the very fact that you've played ten years of MMOs (or perhaps stand alone RPGs that makes all the difference). A lot of the people who started playing MMOs five, six years go have never played a game that hasn't held their hand. And THOSE are the people who need help.

Also a tutorial doesn't have to be something that holds your hand. But enough people have come forward with problems of what to do, because people are so used to be led around. Instead of thinking a lot of people just walk away and go play something familiar. Which is a shame because so many people might like the game if they were around long enough to give it a chance.

We've seen it time and again on these forums, people logging into GW 2 who are confused about what to do. I mean how clear did Anet really make the heart/dynamic event distinction, for example? Stuff like that.

A tutorial doesn't have to be a hand-holding exercise, but many have complained that Anet has dropped the ball on showing people how to play the game.

I don't think people needed to be shown how to play the game, I think it's pretty clear once you start walking around to see what gives you exp and what doesn't. DEs pop up, NPCs with hearts above their heads, even when you first enter the game the NPC calls you too him and explains what needs to be done in that area, explains about the heart events, etc. People have been led around by the hand too much in other games, it's true. But that doesn't mean that Anet should have to stoop to holding their hand too. So we'll just have to agree to disagree that "Anet has dropped the ball on showing people how to play the game".

When I started playing, I had a multitude of questions. That's where the guild came in
Stuff like the crafting was new to me. I also never knew that the heart chars sold you green armour and weapons. Only found that out on me third week.

Sort of what I'm talking about. A lot of people didn't realize heart guys became karma vendors. A lot don't realize that there's a red line under skills that show when you're in range. Things like this need to be mentioned somewhere.

If you find leveling in GW2 to be a grind I think you just don't like the leveling aspect of MMO's because it is about the least grindy leveling experience I've seen. I just log on and do whatever comes my way personally, never feels grindy. Maybe it is because I played old school MMOs so I have a different definition of grind, dunno.

I can see how people find it to be grindy. Sometimes you just want to enjoy the personal story without having to keep taking breaks to level up.

I think that may be why I enjoyed GW1's storyline so much more than gw2's, that and the cinematic cut scenes.

How can you have trouble leveling in this game? Walk. Click things. Kill something. Boom, you've leveled. Easiest leveling of any game I've played!

Two options. Don't look at the personal story at all until you're level 80 and then you can play it all the way through, or what I do, wait until you've gone ten levels then do the personal story. The personal story is broken into ten level increments anyway so once you hit level 10, you can do the entire leg of the story in one go. At level 20 do it again. That way though there is a break between chapters of the story, you get to see the entire chapter at one time.

Actually just killing enemies adds hardly any experience to the bar. The best ways to level that I've found is the personal story and completing hearts. Vistas, crafting, and dungeons are also very good but more optional.
