Yep. That's why a lot of people ended up buying Guild Wars 1...to unlock cool skins for Guild Wars 2. Just in our guild alone we had easily a dozen guys who bought the game just to get those things unlocked. I ran so many people through all three games, it wasn't funny. For a while I was running people all day every day, just to get everyone in before Guild Wars 2 came out, because I knew that once it did come out, most of those people were never going to go back to Guild Wars 1. And you know, as much as you loved it, Guild Wars 1 is an acquired taste for a lot of people. It's very slow going, particularly if you start in Prophecies.

PvP, of course, is a different issue, but on the PVe side, which is what you had to do to get those points, it was very hard for people to get into. A lot of people, after playing a couple of months, began to see the value, but a couple of months is a long time to have someone play a game to see value.

I can name five, six guys right offhand from our guild who saw Guild Wars 1 as something they had to tolerate to get what they wanted, rather than a fun game in its own right.

    Cool.

In that sense and scenario I can't disagree, even if I don't get why...the HoM rewards were never that enticing imho.I'd say it's a no-brainer they found the game a tad boring as it was dying a slow death and everyone was soloing HoM with heroes.

In regards to my earlier comments though I'm referring to people who bought GW1 at release....did you see many, if any ""Man I'm bored......" threads?I seriously can't recall one until at least 5 years after the game came out.

I had two sons that bought the game at release. Both left shortly after because they were bored. Both moved to WoW and stayed there for years. I don't know about threads, but I sure have evidence in this house. My wife and I inherited their Guild Wars 1 accounts, and never looked back. lol

I can't recall ever seeing complaints of boredom or complacency being raised in GW1 forums shortly after release compared to the amount it has been expressed and observed in this and other GW2 forums a few months after GW2 release. If people purchased GW1 specifically to attain HoM reward they missed the boat anyway. It's a mute point they found the game boring as they were playing it for the wrong reason 2-5 years too late imo.

In saying that's only my subjective experience.

Thing is it's seemingly becoming a trend, or at the least, common criticism that many are unmotivated to play GW2.

Highly disconcerting imo as once such critique becomes common it takes itself away from the realm of subjective opinion and becomes relevant.I'm really intrigued to see what happens in the next year as I'm slowly getting the impression Anet may have dropped the ball in regards to not appreciating the mechanics that kept people playing GW1 for so long.

There were certainly less, and GW forum mods often closed or deleted threads they didn't agree with anyway. I had a thread closed (maybe deleted even I don't really remember) from Guild Wars Guru which was closely tied to Anet, though not owned by it. They didn't really like negative threads those mods. It was a fan site and they were pretty proactive in keeping it positive.

And this was seven years ago. The number of people posting in games forums is minuscule compared to now. In fact, the number of people playing over all was minuscule.

Do we have some sales figures about how many people bought Prophecies at launch. Remember this was their first game. They didn't have 2 million sales in the first month. So when you add it together, and I'm telling you I have two people in my house that stopped playing due to boredom, they can't be the only two guys in the universe...well I think you'll have to admit that you can't even compare. The entire genre has changed, the way forums are moderated as changed, and not having an official forum, which Guild Wars 1 didn't have, changes a lot.

I'm guessing that Guild Wars 1 had, at the time of Prophecies release, less than 25% of the sales of Guild Wars 2. How many of those people would have looked for an unofficial forum and how many of those would have posted when they left?

Edit: One more big difference. How many games came out every month back then for computer and how many of them were MMOs, or something like them. Were there 20 MMOs to compete? Other multiplayer games? As the market gets more saturated, people have more to compete for their time. Simple logic really. Even I have other games I want to play.
