Congrats ANet! While everyone is entitled to their opinions on what should be considered 'Game of the Year', Guild Wars 2 is definitely worth of this nominee IMO.
Hundreds of hours are to be sunk into this game. It never feels like a grind until the end when your trying to get certain kinds of loot. Yeah, the game has a considerable amount of bugs but do any of you remember launches for other MMOs?? If you look back, you will see that Guild Wars 2 has probably had one of the smoothest launches in MMO history when compared to other games!
ANet has created a game that goes way beyond your typical MMO. They have successfully created a very dynamic game with several options. You have your typical PvE, PvP, and Dungeons. But you also have World vs. World. Yeah, this can be a little iffy at times because of the distance but thats what adds strategy to this. Plus the idea of your server fighting another server in one huge war-like battle is an amazing concept. You have Jumping Puzzles. Probably half of the MMOs you play allow your character to jump. But has any game truly implementing platforming skills as part of the game? Possibly...but not to the extent of Guild Wars 2! Hours can be spent on trying to reach these goals. The treasure chests can be disappointing at the end, but you have to admit, getting that achievement at the end of each puzzle is the real prize...[SEE Goemm's Lab; Mad King's Clock Tower].
Best of all, they made the world feel alive. The cities are HUGE. There are citizens running around everywhere. Conversations you can walk up on (not to sound creepy). After playing SWTOR for months and then playing the GW2 Beta, I was shocked at the huge difference in terms of the world seeming alive. So shocked that as soon as I touched the beta, SWTOR felt instantly boring to me and became a job.
It is for all of these reason's that I personally feel that Guild Wars 2 deserves this nomination. Great job ArenaNet! You guys deserve it!
