Thread: PvP on Guild Wars 2

    PvP on Guild Wars 2

Hi, the pvp on guild wars to is going to destroy what should be in the top three of the greatest mmo's purely and simply, the pvp has been made casual. MMO's are not for casual gamers, and i fear the pvp will put of proper pvpers as their is no real competition. A new MMO's aim should be to steal the subscribers of wow purely and simply it was and has always been the best mmo, but i do agree its now being completely destroyed. If Guild Wars 2 gets pvp wrong it will fail, as star wars the old republic dd. Star Wars had everything at first the smooth fun combat decent graphics, and then people went to the warzones, everyone bumped to level 50, no point in leveling. MMO's are about progression, if guild wars 2 takes on the approach of everyone having the same gear i fear for the profits of the companies behind the game.

I am not suggesting remove the pvp whats their however they're should be an option to choose to do casual battles, so it is as the pvp is at the moment, and a choice to join a battle where you go in with what gear you are wearing with the reward of earning some sort of points to purchase more powerful and more interestingly designed pvp armour. If casual gamers and forced to fight skilled competitive mmo players they will not enjoy the game because they will die 24/7. Thanks f you read this far, feedback would be great and well received

Yes, you will be able to "jump into" PvP without hours of mindless gear grind, because everyone will have the same gear in Battleground-style PvP matches. But for me it is one of the best things about GW2 - gear doesn't matter, what matters is pure skill. And when it comes to skill - Hardcore players will find GW2 competitive PvP very interesting. Arena Net wants to go into e-sport with GW2, they have their reasons for that.

What exactly is "casual", btw? Is Team Fortress 2 "casual"? Many people think so, but you show them replays of uber-pr0 games from the best TF2 pro teams and they will be amazed. Really, casual games are games like Flower for PS3, or Facebook games. Games where skill doesn't matter are casual games. GW2 will be just "easy to learn, hard to master". There is no place for "hard" (or "competitive") in casual games.

as you say and sa i said it will be skill dependant however the game will attract alot of casual gamers people who just like to kill people, like call of duty players, as this doesn't have a monthly payment, therefore alot of the people who will play won't be skilled pvpers, and so the people who are won;t have a decent fight on their hands

also theyre is no competitive pvp if everyone just uses the same gear all the time there will be nothing to try and work for

You forgot about one important thing - server browser.

Well, not server browser per se, but you probably have seen how searching for PvP game will look like, right? It's like server browser in FPS game. You will be able to put up your own match, there won't be any randomness. You will look into match browser and search for a game named "Hardcore PvP Only please!" or a game named "Newbies welcome" :P

I really don't see any problem. In WoW you have TONS of "casual" players, who play just for PvE (myself included). I wasn't good in PvP in WoW, because I didn't like the system. But from time to time I just jumped into PvP, because I was bored with other aspects of the game. Lack of monthly fee really isn't a problem here. PvP players will focus on PvP, PvE players will focus on PvE. And people "who just want to kill stuff" are in every MMO, even those with subscription.

And about items... Well, I don't know about you, but I want to play PvP for FUN and satisfaction. I don't care about gear and I don't want to loose because I don't have the best gear, because I didn't play for 1 month and then came back.

yeah and when you jumped into pvp i bet you ruined the battleground for the good pvpers. and wtf they are having a server browser? what kind of crap is that, though i suppose you could also join virtually full games so you will never be outnumbered.

What is it you're afraid of? That a day one newbie pvp-er turns out to be more skilled at pvp than someone who has spent many hours a day perfecting their strategy and builds? Because when gear is taken out of the equation, that's what it all comes down to... how good the player actually is. And that's exactly what it takes to become a true competitive pvp game, and be taken serious in the eSports leagues... which so far have been ruled by mostly FPS kind of games. Games like WoW will never be taken serious as eSports, exactly because having the best gear is so much more important than being the most skilled player. Guild Wars 2 finally eliminates that, and focuses on what's really important... how good you actually are at top level pvp.

But yes, to avoid completely inexperienced newbie players from having to go straight up against the big league pro's, being slaughtered and never daring to try again, there also is a more casual form of competitive pvp, but there is a clear distinction between the top level competitive pvp, and the casual games.

you dont understand how wow works do you? to get the best gear you have to be the best, battlegrounds its gear over skill, arena its skill over gear and if you have equal gear then its pure skill on skill. plus how is battlegrounds on guild wars 2 a top level pvp, its also the bottom level so it cannot be top. As far as im aware there is only one form of pvp on it at the moment which is a battleground form of pvp.

I do understand how wow works, and fact is that it's possible to beat someone who is actually more skilled than you are, just because you happen to have superior gear (yes, you're right, you had to beat someone else to obtain that gear, but the same applies there).

As for pvp in Guild Wars 2... you're wrong. There are definitely 2 forms of competitive pvp... the casual, hot joinable type, and the more professional organized tournament type. To quote lead designer Eric Flannum:

we have what we call competitive PvP, and there are two primary ways to engage in it. Players can join games using a server browser, very similar to what you might experience in a first-person shooter. You can join games in progress, so you won't have to wait for auto-matching if you want to jump in for some quick PvP. For those who are more serious about their PvP, we have a tournament system that matches premade teams of players against each other. It's important to note that competitive PvP features no power progression, so everyone is on equal footing.
