Regardless, in WoW grind = better gear. That defaults it out of any serious eSports scene.

Not every game has to be, or even should be, something where eSports is possible. Guild Wars however has a good history of it, and by equalizing everyone, it keeps the possibility.

While you might enjoy grind, or hunting gear that gives you advantages over others, that's simply not what GuildWars 2 is about. Don't expect it, and if it's something that you absolutely need in your games, GW2 really is not for you.

Anyway, there are multiple forms of PvP in GW2, completely different from each other. There are multiple articles you can read up on, but a good starter is what's found on the GW2 website: http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/pvp/pvp-overview/ . Disclaimer: This article doesn't talk about World vs World vs World, that hasn't been official detailed yet.

Basically, there's 3 types. Hot joinable games, in similar format as tournament games but accessible to more casual players and more customisable. You can jump in and out of games, just like CounterStrike, CoD, BF, etc. There is a game list just like any decent FPS game has a "Server list". Each game has it's own rules, auto-balance on/off, map, number of players, etc. This ranges from 1v1 fights to some pretty large 10v10 fights.

Tournament games, this is where eSports come in. A standard tournament is 5v5. There are four subcatagories, to quote Anet:
Pickup Tournaments: These single-elimination tournaments wait for 8 teams to join before starting. Once they start, they go through 3 rounds of eliminations, with winners receiving qualifier points.
Monthly Tournaments: For monthly tournaments, you'll need a certain amount of qualifier points to join.
Yearly Tournaments: These grand tournaments feature the winners from the monthly tournaments slugging it out for the right to call themselves the best PvP players of the year.
Player-Run Tournaments: These tournaments will be customized by players, allowing for great flexibility and unique bragging rights.
Last but not least is the World vs World vs World PvP type (abbreviated to WvW or WvWvW). This is COMPLETELY different to the first two. You are dropped in a massive map divided into 4 sections. You're team is your entire server (or "world") and your enemies are the two other servers. You fight across huge battlefields, you can take over towns and use siege weapons to hold off enemies, or siege enemy towns and take them over. Guilds can take possession of these towns/outposts. One match goes for the entirety of 2 weeks, after which a winner is announced and some sort of global benefit is given to the winning server in PvE (details of this aren't given yet). Servers are matched up based on performance, so the servers that repeatedly win won't fight the same servers, but fight the other succesful ones. Conversely, servers that repeatedly lose are matched up with ones that do the same.

Feel free to ask if you don't get any of that.

    Three points:

In GW1 tournaments were held where Arenanet actually flew people out to some location and had an official tournament. There were significant cash prizes for this. Though if you'd prefer to get a tournament winner title...

The jouney is more important than the destination. This is actually a very signicant philosophy in GW2. Everyone wants to know what the end-game is. The end-game is the entire game, you can't think of it in terms of traditional MMO structure or you will be completely confused as to what the game is.

Games are for fun. If you don't enjoy it, you shouldn't play it. You enjoy PvPing knowing you are the best of the best? Yearly tournaments for you. Just like to play for semi-casual/semi-hardcore fun? Try hot-join or pickup/player-run tournaments.

    Edit, here's a quote detailing GW1 tournaments a little.

    Guild Wars Factions Championship Finals

What are the prizes offered for the Guild Wars Factions World Championship?

In addition to providing air travel and accommodations for the participating guilds, ArenaNet and NCsoft will be awarding $100,000 (US) in cash prizes.
From the official GW1 website: http://www.guildwars.com/support/faq/gwfc-faq.php

I also forgot to mention before, there will be official PvP ladders and rankings for PvP in GW2.

ComplexNuber is correct, several of the people who participate in professional eSports play games at top level for a living... that's how they earn their money. Guild Wars 2 will be no different... winning a tournament will earn you significant cash.

This for me would be a dream job, I could finally justify years spent gaming. Literally, I added up the hours of all my MMO characters and throw in console gaming and I have spent 2+ years logged on.

Hey op, wow is and always was a bad game. and your spelling and grammar make my head hurt.

BTW op, you are pretty darn transparent. You want gear in game so you can spend 15 hour a day outleveling people in pvp so you have your "gear crutch". This will allow you to have a large advantage in pvp over others. You dont want competitive, if you did you would applaud gw2s no gear system.

But now you will be equal in everyway unless you are lucky to pick the class that has the OP factor. I can feel your anxiety from here.

^ This. WoW's PvP system is hot garbage. Constant gear grinds? No thanks... There's only 1 MMO that has done it right so far, and that's Dark Age of Camelot. It didn't matter how high of a Realm Rank you were, if you didn't have the skills to back it up, you usually lost. Even to players half your rank. And GW2 seems to be a lot like that, which I'm all for.

Have you watched any thing on gw2 pvp. It's all based off of skill. There's competitive 5v5. And it takes much more skill then pressing 123 like wow, swtor and such. I'm not hating on either of the two being I have played both since release. But with dodgeing and a unique skill set and no pocket healers, Gw2 pvp will most def challenge you and any other hardcore gamer. Also once you read up on pvp rather then blindly comment on it you will see that there's also a basic grouping system which will seperate people based on skill. In both 5v5 AND WvWvW.

dont you think, that having no way to progress in pvp, will make pvp something to do wen your not doing anything else, or it will just get boring?
