Do all the heart quests you can do, try to participate in every dynamic event you come across (some of them will need triggering, so whenever you see a guy with a orangeish circle with a white star in it standing somewhere, talk to them. That usually starts the dynamic event), do your personal quests, pick up all gathering nodes you come across (they usually grant more xp than a mob-kill and add towards your daily quest which grants additional xp). Also, if you can spare the coin, pick up some crafting skills, because they also grant decent xp.

You could also mix up the pve with some wvw. Go there and find a group of people (I'd recommend informing yourself about your server's alliances beforehand. Most servers have a public TS for WvW coordination, so you might want to check that out in order to know where the action is happening) and stick with them. Capping towers, camps etc. yields good xp and karma.

as to moving on: when you have completely discovered an area you should have come across the portals that take you to the next zones (also, when you've finished your personal quests for one area, you will usually see the green marker on the map that shows you where to go). I think as a human you will most likely be sent to Kessex Hills next. But you could also go to Divinity's Reach, use the portal to Lion's Arch and go to any other race's starting area to finish their maps too. This way you can avoid having too low level for the content in your area, which can easily happen if you're not doing everything I've mentioned above (plus: now that the population in levelling zones has dropped significantly since launch, fewer events get triggered than previously)

And don't forget crafting. It's nice to craft some now and then for some easy exp!

Don't panic, just explore whatever area you are comfortable with, try to collect every material you can (if only to sell them on the trading post if you don't want to craft anything) and keep an eye on the daily achievement.

In 7 hours I have managed to raise my human necromancer up to level 13 and he's still at the level 6 personal story, hasn't explored that much of the other races starting areas, hasn't completed Divinity's Reach exploration (also a nice source of xp and stuff) and is about halfway through the Queensdale exploration.

Just roam around, check out events if they happen near you (or someone on Map chat is telling you about them) and if you can try to participate.

Also, remember to revive people whenever you can (not just for xp, players will usually be happy to get back into the game if they can't/won't use waypoints)

If you're a Devona just go into WvWvW and join up with one of their many Zergs. You'll get massive EXP, Karma, and Silver from steamrolling the other undermanned servers.

    good advice above.

I make sure that when I am working through a zone I go through every portaI see. This will "unlock" new areas for you as the nearest waypoint in the new area will be activated. I make sure I have the waypoint flagged before returning to the zone I am working in. Even if the new zone is above your level you should be able to get to the nearest waypoint without getting in any battles.

When you get to a level that is appropriate for that area you already have a waypoint you can jump to.

Just reread your orignal post ... portals are along the edges of your current zone. They are blue circular looking teleporters. They open up an area next yo the one you are in.
