Depends on where you are, but in most end game areas, you'd need to spec for a balance of damage and damage mitigation/health. The reason for this is one of the differences between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 is not instanced and creatures continually spawn. If you don't kill them fast enough, you'll end up with more and more creatures which isn't probably what you're looking to do.
In a game where creatures spawn, you're better off taking them down and moving on rather than standing in one place and tanking. In fact, you can "sort of" tank in this game, but it's not the kind of tanking you can do in other games. I'd say give it a try before you figure out how you want to play. Making a decision before you've seen how the game plays won't help you enjoy the game more.
