Hey someone in my family was doing that alpha testing of Guild wars 2. Alpha testing is before the beta testing.. so do you think she will be able to give me a beta key when the closed beta comes out?

ArenaNet system designer, Jon Peters, on Reddit - Guild Wars 2 entered closed beta testing, December 16.
"We will officially enter Closed Beta Testing this Friday (16 Dec 2011). It will be marked with an increase in our pool of testers. To clarify, this phase of testing is still under NDA and is not open to the public.
Based on the feedback we get from our current Closed Beta Testing, we will determine the next phases of our beta program in which we will open beta access to more people."
But if I had a friend or family member that had been in alpha phase, I'd be buying the beer and seeing what could happen.![]()

Always take hold of things by the smooth handle.
Hi JRoyales, welcome to these forums. Lord John is right... the closed beta has already started. And if the family member was part of the alpha testing, then they're probably already in the closed beta. But I don't think they get extra closed beta keys to deal out amongst other family members.
Just a random thing to add in, the first Beta "test" is officially finished, and they're moving onto a second (I'm not sure what exactly that implies). Supposedly progress is looking very good right now, so I think open beta looks hopeful. Read this on an interview linked on Reddit.
Yea they do several closed beta tests until they are satisfied with the result.
It's probably 2 weeks of closed beta, then 2 weeks of polishing, then again 2 weeks of beta, and so on...
If the feedback is good and usefull, it will be probably tak another 2-3 months before that's finished.
And after that.. Open Beta
My own personal opinion here, I hope they don't do an open beta. I'd rather see them invite like 4000 people who do beta testing normally for a closed beta session to test load capacity and larger WvWvW or PvE content. The thing I've seen with the last few betas I've been in is that people who play open beta are usually just using it as a means of early entry versus a means of actually testing the game and trying to find exploits/bugs.
Not saying that an open beta wouldn't help GW2, just thinking they can benefit from longer closed beta sessions where they're getting good feedback versus open where they'll get feedback like, this is so much better than WoW, so long TOR, this game sucks you don't even have mounts, etc. Again, that's my own experience with open betas though and I'm sure Arenanet will know how to handle it better than I.
They've already said there will definetly be an open beta, but it'll be short compared to what they did with GW1.
Thing is, you can't really get proper load testing without a full scale open beta. I'm sure Arenanet doesn't want any server crashes on launch day, that'd be a pretty bad first impression after all.
I agree, but I think that's why they've said they're going to go for a short open beta. The thing I've seen with the last few betas I've been in is that people who play open beta are usually just using it as a means of early entry versus a means of actually testing the game and trying to find exploits/bugs.
That's a pretty generalized statement and probably has a bit of truth, but some open beta testers will actually find and report bugs in the game, whether it's lore, environment, quests, pathing AI, typos, whatever. Some of the folks that succeed in getting into open beta are future players that want their next MMORPG to be awesome. There will always be those that get into beta that are motivated by profit or greed (gold farmers and guide sellers) or are just trying to get a leg up on the rest of the community, but on the other end of the spectrum, there are those that will use open beta to start their theory crafting and number crunching, which imo can provide valuable feedback to the devs. Sorry, I just dislike having the lowest common denominator defining a group of folks.

Agreed, and in the betas I've participated in I'm throwing out bugs and trying to participate if it's a dungeon, pvp, open world event weekend or what have you. I guess it's just the case of the few spoiling it for the many. Overall if they can get good data from an open beta I'm all for it as I'll be there telling them what I can.
The open beta is seen by many as a way to test out a game without paying for it, like the demos of old. This is especially true for games that will have a monthly fee since the barrier for entry may be just that much higher.
Feeling tired? There's a nap for that.
