This may seem like a bit of an odd question, but I was wondering; has anyone heard if the thief class will have lock picking and/or trap disarming mechanics or abilities or something? I know it's a small thing, really, but I think it adds to the character of the thief class to be able to break and enter and disarm potentially harmful devices. It also makes them more useful party members when they can help players go places they couldn't otherwise.
I doubt it... if the game had any use for those (that is, if there were any locks that would require picking, and I don't think there are), then that could easily create a dependency on the Thief profession... meaning that the whole 'party looking for healer' thing that ArenaNet tried so hard to eliminate, would be back in the form of 'party looking for thief' before they would go out into a dungeon or whatever.
Point taken. I was thinking that if it were included, it would be for secondary things, like opening up quicker, alternate paths through a dungeon or opening chests for loot that isn't vital but otherwise wouldn't be obtainable. There could be alternate ways of opening these chests and/or paths, though, that others could do that would just be less convenient, like searching for a key or having a warrior break it open. They wouldn't even have to be less convenient, either, just more in-character with the classes.
Well, you never know what ArenaNet come up with for the personal stories and the dungeon instances... it's always possible that they think of different ways that different professions solve certain puzzles/problems. So in specific instances, it's always possible that the Thief will get a lockpicking solution. But I don't think it will be available as a general skill or tool.
