One thing I do really enjoy is the hide helm feature that is in most games. I found that in Rift you can also hide shoulders which is pretty awesome because sometimes the game makes you wear stuff you really don't want to:

Then again this is only pvp and you can think of it like more like a uniform that you're wearing for your team. It's not something you will be in all the time and you can customize the gear to whatever look you want outside pvp. Unless of course you're going to be in the mists 95% or more of the time in which case we can always hope for the hide/show options on specific armor pieces.

So is it confirmed that even the appearance of gear is standardized in conquest PvP?

No, gear stats will be standardized... gear appearance will still be fully customizable.

When you enter conquest mode you're actually given a set of gear and items and then lose them as soon as you leave. This differs from WvWvW where when you enter you retain your existing equipment, only the stats are modified to be approximately a level 80. As everyone who enters conquest is going to be given the same gear based on profession I would imagine that the look will be the same per team, and as far as I've seen it's going to be red versus blue so you can easily tell teammates from enemies.

The original outfits we see in earlier PvP demos were said to be placeholders and each looked pretty much identical to eachother no matter the profession. I think that we'll see over the next few weeks different looking gear based on the type, ie light, medium, heavy, male, female. My hope is that they also make gear different based on profession as well.

Edit: Centaur might be right, but I'll see if I can find any info supporting/denying my own thoughts.

I know the stats will be standardized, I just wasn't sure about the appearance.

I really like all the armors for PvP. I can't wait to see all the options I can choose from for my class. I really like the female scholar armor on the previous page. I think it looks really cool. Being a guy, I'll play a female character every now and then. Not because of the chest or that I'm a pervert, but because of the animations. In my opinion, some of the animations look better with different races/genders.

Yeah, one thing that these images do show, is that there's a huge variety in character customization and armor skins available to choose from! People should have no problem distinguishing themselves from the rest and finding something to their own liking.

Apparently Guild Wars Insider took some flak for the quality of their screenshots they released.
We heard a lot of comments about the graphic quality in our recent round of exclusive screenshots. GWI asked for everyday pvp action screenshots from a recent round of tests, not beauty shots on high end machines that only a few players actually can afford. This means you’re going to see a mixture of screen sizes and texture qualities. Besides, most companies when doing beta testing don’t always seed high end textures to testers simply because of file size and the frequency of builds needing to be deployed. High end graphic testing is often it’s own specific pass, not every machine is running Ultra all the time.
