Guinness World Record: 999 players competing at the same time

Yesterday, MuchDifferent held a large scale FPS game in which 999 players competed on the same map at the same time... without any serious lag issues. A new Guinness World Record. They were hoping for a 1000, but they missed that mark by 1. Still, it's a huge step forward from the previous record, which was at 600. See their blog post for more details.

I hope this will help to further improve the possibilities and the performance of online games, and maybe it will even help ArenaNet to further improve their GW2 performance for WvWvW... who knows, with a little luck and further optimization, ArenaNet may be able to break that record in a year or so

Hopefully. I'm playing SWTOR atm, and that game can barely handle 20 v 20, so hopefully they look at this tech as well.

Well, I don't think we will have to worry about such low numbers. They said that at the moment WvWvW should be able to handle around 500 people per map, and they wouldn't have said so if that meant horrible lag. They also said it wasn't fully optimized yet, so I have hopes that number may still grow a bit...

I'd be happy if they could make it to 100 vs 100 in the same area. Thinking about the actual fight size, even in places like Alterac Valley from WoW, 40 vs 40 was a pretty huge fight and yhou hardly saw all 80 people in one place.

Understandably the maps in GW2 are large and will also have things like cross map trebuchets, dynamic events, weather systems etc so even if you can only see another 100 people at any given point I imagine you might see some latency due to something going on out of your viewable range.

I just hope that they can get the game to run smoothly with tons of people in the area since that's what the game is all about to me, whether that's PvE or WvWvW.
