First the i5 480m has 2 cores not 4 and has a turbo speed of (off the top on my head) just under 3.0
Yes you can play the game and yes you will see drops in crowded areas. I would think that in large events, WVW it would be almost unplayable. (5/15 FPS) depending on how many people are their. Because of the processor since you did not state your monitor rez.

You will see a FPS drop in crowded areas, but we all do. The game is still being improved on how intensive it can be to run. I have an i5 + HD 7870 and my FPS can drop below 30 here and there. Other than that it is 60FPS on high/vsync. I turn the frame limiter to 60.

That is the simply the nature of an MMO. I remember when raiding opposite faction cities (WoW) the server could not handle the fight and all participants lag up. GW2 servers don't lock up, instead it seems to be each individual's PC. :P

Anyway you can play the game at quite an enjoyable level. During launch (saving for an i5) I played with a Core2Duo (OLD AS SHIT!) OC'd to 3.6ghz + HD 7870. Big WvW battle I dropped to 8 FPS, and it was still playable, just not running at a great framerate. Most importantly don't be scared to play, you will be fine. I play WvW with a PvP guild all day long and due to culling, there's more issues to worry about besides your computer specs.

But it also has hyperthreading, so its performance is somewhere between a dual and quad core. I ran GW2 acceptably for months on a slower i5 laptop with settings nearly maxed out, though I never tried WvW; it was only getting 15-25fps, but that's fast enough to play a fantasy MMO.

Guild Wars 2 does not use Hyperthreading so it has 2 cores and thats all it has. 15/25 FPS will turn into a slide show in WVW and large events.

    8 FPS is playable?

a dual core is all that is needed to play the game, so quad dual or Hyperthreading will all be fine.

the game may DROP TO 8 FPS and before dropping that low it was running at a higher framerate. So, yes the game was playable with hiccups. Read the entire thing next time, thanks. There are tons of people playing at low framerates. 30FPS is considered the rate where the average person sees things as being completely smooth, it is not the rate that is considered "playable".

I did read the post nowhere did it state this (the game may DROP TO 8 FPS and before dropping that low it was running at a higher framerate.) Also you stated it was OC to 3.6 as his has no chance. You are giving bad advice again hun.

I'm not responsible for your lack of comprehension of English. The word drop implies it must have been higher at a point. Pretty simple. I gave no bad advice because after my tangent of personal experience with framerate drops, I revisited the OPs question.

My answer is simple: Almost anyone playing this game experiences framerate drops in large battles and events. I've played on a bare minimum spec'd and a PC capable of running at high. You've made it a habit to quote and nitpick my posts. You can lend your time to something much more positive.

Uh, games don't need to 'use hyperthreading', they just need to use enough threads to take advantage of the virtual cores. If GW2 can make use of four real cores it can make use of the four virtual cores in a laptop i5. There's no difference from the program's viewpoint.

Yet it played through the Beta weekends OK with vastly more people in events than any zone I've seen since. And while I never tried WvW it was OK in the 'Hunger Games' finale too.
