I have a staff equipped and I want to swap it for a trident which I have in inventory but when i get rid of the staff into inventory I cannot get the trident to equip all I does is go to the other side of the screen I am on the right level for this piece of rquipment so whay am I doing wrong please?

Tridents, spears and spearguns are only for underwater use. If you look at your hero screen (H) you see your armor and stats, on the left you see your normal weapons on the right (under your stats) you see your underwater weapons (and air mask)

At lvl 7 professions (except elementalist) get weapon swamp where you can switch between 2 sets of weapons in combat. To equip something in the 2nd weapon slot drag and drop in your hero screen.

Good to know, engi is the one profession I still haven't tried so I know pretty much nothing about them other than my thief likes to kill them in WvW But I'll try out a engi at some point.

when you play engi, I highly recommend the bomb kit to start. It's melee ranged, but melee mobs follow you so evey bomb you lay, the walk into. so all you have to do is run around in circles and watch them die. Doesn't work so well with ranged mobs tho.
