    PlayStation 4

So I just watched the entire PS4 event... yes, all of it... live.

Gotta say, its shaping up quite well (though I'm not thrilled how they're doing the so-called backwards compatibility). The system itself looks to be amazingly innovative, whilst the games just look insane... Watch Dogs, Deep Down, and the new Killzone are particularly awe inspiring (especially Watch Dogs), and Bungie's new commitment to exclusive content for their upcoming title, Destiny, promises to steal a good percentage of the long standing Halo fanbase that has made the XBox so popular (Microsoft sure dropped the ball when they let them go solo). All around an amazing conference, and while I was going into it thinking I'd likely wait for the second gen PS4 before upgrading from the PS3, I'm now left thinking how I might budget myself so that I can afford one this Holiday season... its just THAT wowing.

And now, just because, here is IGN's new PS4 page!
And here's a look at the new Dualshock 4 controller:

Its got a touchpad, a motion light, and a share button for easy gameplay video uploads.

I want one too. But during the entire event I couldn't stop thinking about this:

Also in case people don't want to watch the entire 2-hour-ish conference:

I must admit it looks pretty awesome. If I had to get a console I'd definitely go for a Playstation 4. I started out with a Playstation 1 back in the days when computers mostly sucked, then moved on to a PS2 (still awesome), but skipped the PS3 because I was busy with PC gaming.

same as Izzy until about a year ago when i bought a second hand PS3 with 15 games (about 10 good games), mainly to double up as a bluray for the bedroom. Hardly touched it tbh and not completed anything. PS4 probably will be next one i buy, but not at silly prices, i'll wait while i'm flush and bothered about 1...in a few years lol

Considering that the PS3 has had Remote Play with the PSP since launch (albeit only a small number games actually utilized it, kinda like the Six-Axis motion technology that was built into the PS3 controllers), I think whoever believes Nintendo invented that idea is quite the fool.

GBA could do it too with specific games, like Four Swords. Sega Dreamcast had limited capabilities as well with the memory card minigames. No one really invented it. Like everything else in gaming. The question is, how will Sony use it? Because they've never been very good at innovating really.

Neither the GBA nor the DC memory card did anything even remotely close to what Sony's Remote Play could do with the PS3 and PSP, but if you want to bring them up, you must include Sony's PocketStation while you're at it, unless you want to seem biased.

Of course, you're not all wrong... I mean, the PlayStation itself is merely an evolution of Nintendo attempting to copy the Sega CD but then screwing Sony to the point where they decided to turn it into a standalone system of their own. Of course, then they went on to show the dominance of disc based home gaming (the Sega Saturn tried to help, as did the Dreamcast, but Sega was doomed the moment Sony stepped in the ring, it would seem), and even developed the first built in rumble feature for its controllers.

Sony then dominated the market with the PS2, which was the first gaming console to have effective online capabilities (though both Sega and Nintendo had both tried and failed before them), something that all consoles MUST HAVE these days, and introduced pressure sensitive buttons to their controllers (something Microsoft is just BARELY starting to look into, themselves, and that only Sega had looked into before, but had never been able to fully utilize).

Then the PS3 made a few innovations, as well (as I've already mentioned), such as full game Remote Play via the PSP and the use of the Six-Axis motion controller... unfortunately, as these were both optional, most developers saw them as superfluous nonsense since they were concentrating on making games for 3 platforms (the PS3, X360, and PC), only 1 of which had those functions, so they never really took off... that is, until now as the Remote Play functions have been emulated to a degree by once partner Nintendo, and seems to be a non-optional system function of the PS4 this time around (meaning the developers won't decide if it can be done or not... it can just simply be done).

So yeah... I guess Sony really does have a bad track record with innovation.
I mean, that must be why BDs died out and everyone buys HD-DVDs now.

Adding more tech to your system doesn't innovate gameplay. Especially when Sony doesn't actually make any games.

Sony is a game publisher that has a number of developers under them.

Would you say that EA or Activision don't make any games? Because they're publishers, too, that just have a bunch of developers under them like Sony... they just don't also make the technological devices for the games to be played on.

But all that aside, with such a comment I have to wonder if you really watched the PS4 event at all? Did you just sleep through the whole developer video or what? And even further beside that, how is innovating gameplay even remotely the responsibility of the console manufacturer? Shouldn't that be solely on the developers that... y'know... actually make the games (like the bloke working for Sony who's developing that game KNACK they showed off)? Developers wanted better technology... that's what a console is... a piece of technological equipment for developers to utilize while making a game, that can then be used to play said game. The PS4, more than any other system before it, is a developer's console. It was built with developers in mind, and through using developers' input on what they wanted from a gaming console, so that they could do more and do it better.

But really, you bringing up gameplay innovations makes me wonder if you even understand the difference between a gaming console and a game... or maybe you just have this undying need to be absolutely right about everything, and hate the fact that I pointed out a bunch of Sony innovations after you said they don't have a good track record with them, that you're trying to throw a wrench into somewhere it doesn't belong.

You can't have better games without better technology... period.
