Lightbulb How to get Guild Wars 2 to use files on DVDs for initial installation

    Hi all,

When I tried to install the game for the first time yesterday, the installer patched itself a little, then didn't even bother looking at the files on the DVDs, it started downloading the whole game. I wanted to play the game last night, and not wait many hours for a 16GB download, so I played and tested some theories, and managed to reduce the download size to only 6-7GB, essentially only the patches from the retail launch.

I blogged a step-by-step guide on how I did it here:

Just thought I could help out anyone that had the same problem as me.

    Thanks

I don't know if there is any risks or problems coming up from doing that method. Can't see that there can't be a problem when the some of the games content doesent get downloadet. Maybe you will find some strange bug? Anyways, nice found out. Will keep me updated to see if there is any problems with the method :P

    Hi,

No no, you misunderstand. My method still makes the game finish downloading, it ends up with the full game complete and all, if it makes you feel better you can run the repair tool (there *is* a repair tool right??) after it finishes installing, to check everything. I've played the game for a few hours using this method and it's all good so far.

The best/easiest method was already posted http://www.guildwars2forum.com/threa...or-DVD-install
This method is confirmed working on Windows XP Pro (32 bit) and on Windows 8 (64 bit)

Saves about 17.5GB worth of download.

    And it's easy.

Agreed, that method is easy. It didn't work for me. When I restarted the installer, it still insisted on downloading everything, never looking at the DVDs at all. :-\

It could be that the files you copied were corrupt in some way. I've found it's best to download the client, allow it to run and begin download, close it out and copy your original .dat file, then run the client launcher again. That usually gets it kicking, but it may still update your .dat file if it's old.
