NCSoft Sued for $28 million by Ultima Creator - Richard Garriot

So, why is this Guild Wars 2 news exactly? Well, hopefully it doesn't become Guild Wars 2 news. However, NCSoft are the publishers behind the Guild Wars series. And $28 million isn't just some chump change a company like NCSoft has lying around.

What effect the lawsuit could potentially have with Guild Wars 2 is all speculation at this point. However, we're all gamers and speculation is part of the game.

Here's the news summary, and link below

    -----------------------

Ultima Creator Richard Garriott Just Sued A Cool $28 Million Out Of NCSoft

    - Garriott parted ways with NCSoft after the closing of Tabula Rasa.

    - In May, Garriott filed suit against NCSoft for fraud, breach of contract, and negligent misrepresentation. He said that he didn't voluntarily leave the company, which was NCSoft's story.

    - Garriott had stock options in NCSoft, and he believed those options were effected by what was actually his termination.

    - The original suit had Garriott asking for $47 million in compensation.

    - Upon the winning of $28 million, Garriott said "I am extremely pleased with the jury's decision."

I can't believe I played Ultima Online for 4 years and gave the man money for so long. Calls himself "Lord British" in-game and out. Talk about ignoring early warning signs of omega level douchebaggery. I do love that he got laughed out of the UK when declaring that he should be referred to as Sir Richard Garriott.

I never liked Garriot. Granted, I've never shared more than three sentences with the guy. I dont care what he calls himself, I never liked Ultima.. and Tabula Rasa had a lot of potential that I blamed Garriot for failing to realize. Having read the lawsuit, though, it seems to me he did get squarely screwed by NCSoft. Maybe it was just the best way to deal with him, maybe they just wanted it all gone, but he was in the right this time.

Even if this did affect GW2, that wouldnt be Garriot's fault. You can't blame someone for demanding restitution that they're actually due.

You're right, business is business. And I agree about Tabula Rasa, there were inklings of a great game hidden in there somewhere.

I'm not too worried for Guild War 2 either. If something happens and NCSoft is no longer publishing, I'm sure they can find another suitor quickly. Hell, I'd wonder if there's enough gold in the A-Net coffers by now to self-publish.

This ain't a bad thread to necro, (see what I did there?) actually as there can never be enough Lord British bashing. Shoot the man off into space. Leave him there. The end.

And the way I see it, 28 mil is gonna be pocket change after the revenue GW2 brings to the table. Ya heard it here first!

I believe he'd actually enjoy that.
