Yea I understand that they're meant for utility, but my point is that they're not what a lot of people are talking about. Also I think they're pretty lackluster. Most of the secondary abilities are pretty meh (IMO) and the CDs are kinda hefty (upwards of a minute or more). I was just disappointed with them.
I can understand your feelings in this regard. It wasn't too bad for me in PvE, but the lack of really being able to do anything in WvW due to the long cooldowns just had me standing there watching the action instead of being in the action.
I even got bored a few times and rotated my skills around (all pets, all wells, or all signets ect ect...) just so I'd have something to do. Let's face it, when there are two "zergs" fighting each other running up in the middle of them, with daggers, is a quick trip to the downed state. So waiting on the staff, waiting on the staff...yea...waiting on the staff waiting on the stafff /sleep. Do have to admit in WvW, using the pets kept me entertained for a bit better then others, but even they have fairly long cooldowns once they die.
As i said in another thread, my necro wont be for pvp, just pve. Necro's can tout they are the most resilient of the scholars, and that would be true, but being survivable isn't all that great in PvP IMO, if I really wanted that, i'd go with a Guardian.![]()
What about people who spec with death magic traits, giving minions both more health and more damage output?
In organized PvP they can be useful especially versus Thiefs if you come on a 1v1 or 2v2 scenario. The health boost really didn't seem noticeable especially if someone took the couple of seconds to target them and lay em to rest. I suppose in the smaller variant fights, they didnt seem to make much of a difference, but when full on fights, they seemed to work fairly well provided I didnt get focused from the start. On another note, the elite pet's cooldown is annoying long for what it does, and of any changes the necro could use, that would be my highest one on the list.
Though I didn't note the health being all that high when I went into a pure pet build in WvW, you only have skills/traits from your true level and what you've already unlocked. With all the AoE flying around in WvW due to Rangers/Elementalist (and for crying out loud) Guardians with 2hd's, they just die so quickly you spend the majority of your time trying to re-summon them. I guess they are good for harassment, but I would not say any given one of them specifically led to the death of any given person I fought. The "well" spells did much better in that regard from my experience. They suffer from long cooldowns too.
*Edit* Some of the above may have sounded awkward, so i'll try to explain a bit better. Necro pets aren't tanks by any means. The elite version has the highest health and does okay, but the others have a very low base health (is why they can die if they get targeted in PvE so easily). Even with a 60% health boost it makes maybe a "one hit" difference. Even math wise it's pretty easy to see that their health pools aren't gonna get much effect because they begin so low. EX: They have 500Hp base, + 60% of base = 800 health. One or two normal attacks, and they are still gonna go down. As stated before, this is even more so when AoE's start being stacked in the same area. I won't fault their damage, especially when using their abilities properly, they just don't seem to live long. In contrast, my Mesmer's phantasms lived longer in PvP.

I tried WvW and was pretty disappointed when we were attacking a keep. They just stacked rangers/elementalists on the ramparts. I use staff/axe+focus so range was an issue. It was just straight up boring....
I'm looking for a ranged class that is durable, hits hard, has a lot of oh s**t buttons and is fun to play lol. But unfortunately its feeling more and more like the necro isnt what I'm looking for. Their weapon skills are alright, but their utility slot skills (especially the minions) I find to be clunky, awkward, low damage if any, and not a whole lot of synergy (this last part could just be due to my lack of understanding of the class).
I understand that the utility slots are just that, utility, but I don't find our utility skills terribly impressive and I was definitely disappointed with them.
Other classes I'm interested in are Mesmer, elementalist, ranger, and possibly thief/warrior, but Playing a melee class in this game doesn't Look like a great idea, especially for pve.
If any of you have any thoughts or insight please feel free to share =)
There's definitely very useful ways of playing the necro in wvw, the actual damage in terms of high numbers isnt overly impressive but if you spec to stack up the conditions and then use the utility skill "epidemic" you can actually spread a stack of, for example, 15 bleeds you've just inflicted upon someone to the entirity of his zerg. Watching the numbers tick then is quite impressive, I would even go as far as saying necromancers are the best wvwvw class FOR keep defense - quite feesable to hold off a large group of invaders for a fair amount of time just stacking conditions and spreading them from the walls.
I specced to totally neglect the minions as I agree they aren't very practical in pvp. Talking about durability, the necromancer is way up there with the best aswell...speccing to stack up life force pretty quickly and just going in and out of death shroud whilst your heals are on CD and you can still deal decent DPS. Just my impressions, but I can't wait to play the necro more in wvw
I definitely want to give dagger/dagger necro a try, because I didn't in the last beta. I didn't find I love the staff, which would probably be quite good in WvW, since it was a spammable first skill and then four AOE ground targeted spells, but since I don't love ground targeted spells generally I didn't love the staff.
So far, my favorite combo and this is for PVe, since that's where I spent my time, was the scepter warhorn, but after reviewing the dagger/dagger skills with their life style, I wouldn't mind trying a melee necro. This is where, in PVe, anyway, minions really come on. If you're PVeing you want something to take the heat off you, even briefly, so minions can be quite helpful.
Sure I can totally see how a minion build would be perfect for PvE, I did try daggers and found necro's a bit too squishy squishy for daggers, if running a minion build I think I'd just stay back and spam bleeds and vulnerability to what my minions are attacking.
