    Aion

So my guild decided we wanted to play an MMO until Guild Wars 2 came out, and after a discussion we decided on Aion. Admittedly, the game had a lot of problems when I played it a couple of years back, so I wasn't expecting much. I have been, so far, pleasantly surprised. But it's only a couple of days and who knows how bad it will get.

For a traditional MMO, however, it's not bad at all. And it's free. Really free. No content is blocked because you haven't payed money. No classes are cut off from you because you haven't paid money. You can play the game free, all of it, without paying a cent. Pretty cool for NCsoft to do that.

One of the big problems for PVE'ers that Aion had was that once you got to the late 20s in level, you simply ran out of quests and had to either grind or PVP. I've heard they've fixed that, so it'll be interesting to see. Also, they've added player housing, and they have a pretty damned good crafting system.

I'll post here from time to time, any thoughts I have on Aion now that it's free.

I liked a lot about Aion when I first played it, but the mandatory PvP was a turnoff. I can tolerate the occasional gank from someone who obviously can't handle a fair fight, but the PvP in that game was so hilariously imbalanced around release. Not sure how it fares now, though.

I don't really want to PVP much in Aion. I'll do PVP in Guild Wars 2, but I'm more interested in a skill-based system than a gear-based one. I don't intend to be here long enough to grind out any kind of advantage, after all, so I'm looking just to keep the guild playing something that's fun and that let's us hang out together and get to know each other. Though I'm curious to see the PVP anyway...I just expect I'll die a lot.

I will of course stay in Ship Happens for GW2 but I'll join you guys on Aion if you'll have me. I'll have to DL it first.
Ship Happens, so why not join it? www.ShipHappens.GuildPortal.com

Of course. We made a Wardens of Destiny Guild in the game, which you're welcome to join just for Aion. We're pretty casual though, but a lot of fun.

forced PvP has never worked, and never will.

Aion sucked when it came out, sounds like it still does.

That's what made me leave Aion. Don't get me wrong I love to PvP, but when I want to PvP, not when it is forced on me.

I don't recall from the time it release but there were no PvE servers were there? I probably got forced to a PvP server by my guild at the time if there were.

Personally anyone wanting to play a MMORPG while waiting for GW2 I would recommend Dark Age of Camelot due to the familiarity of the 3 faction PvP and the Frontier fighting with keeps and sieges similar to GW2's WvW.

@Pedro There are no PVP or PVE servers it was advertised as a PVP game..so World pvp is probable on any server. They have fixed a lot of 20-50 grind, they added a ton of quests and new systems like vehicles and pets and housing.

I do agree that Dark Age of Camelot would be a great game for waiting for gw2, but the goal was to play a "Free" game..and DAoC is still pay to play haha

I played Aion from open beta, and got all excited for the housing system, and waited, and waited some more, finally I got bored and left before they implemented it.

I have to admit I had a lot of fun in that game, and I loved flying! Since it's now free, I think it's worth a look-see for anyone who wants to try something else...for me though, I have definitely had my fill of Aion Had fun leveling my chanter (and sorceress), but chanters really are an awesome class.
