Thread: PvE Leveling

    PvE Leveling

During Beta, I kinda ignored PvP despite loving PvP. I just had so much fun with Events, and the local quests that I felt no need to PvP.

Might want to talk leveling strategies for PvE focused players.

I found that being lower level in some high level Events gave me massive XP and karma. The higher level players were kind enough to help me and so I leveled fast. Then I'd go back and revisit some of the lower level areas and help out lower level players doing Events. It was a great way to get XP.

Don't forget to get your harvesting tools though like I did for a long time. Harvesting gives you some nice XP and not to mention moolah.

I found the best way to level was to go into a new story area.... seek out the hearts, then do those quests as I waited for events to pop... then raced over to the events and got the XP from them, then finished up the hearts quests. Every so often, I'd then go to the personal storyline. There was a level recommendation on the personal storyline and that recommendation was usually smart.

Any more thoughts? Maybe can edit this post up to be something good

Listen to the NPCs! They hint at events! I have ignored some of the remarks, not knowing how important they were and only late did I discover that "This is a dangerous area, we might be attacked at any moment!" is a pretty strong indication an event is going to take place eventually. I only found out running through there by accident a long time later.

People should not think this game as linear as it seems. Hang around if you think something is fishy, chances are you might be right!

I think the best strategy for leveling in GW2 is not to think about leveling. Just explore all the different areas, participate in anything you like, and do whatever you consider to be fun. You'll be max level fast enough... there's no need to try and rush it in any way. And if you run into something that's higher level and that is too tough for you... that should be a good enough indication that you may need to spend more time in the lower level zones.

I totally agree...the point is for all of us to have a good time ingame...

I found it quite simple to keep up with the level requirements of my personal story by playing with a dedicated partner. We'd trade off doing episodes from each other's personal story line. Whenever the story would require us to enter a new zone, we'd make an initial sweep of the area, establishing a few waypoints, completing some renown hearts, foraging, and participating in events. After completing whatever chapter(s) of the story taking place in that zone, we'd usually explore it more completely for skill points, points of interest, and to get all waypoints. This would usually give us an opportunity to experience more of the available dynamic events.

The more people focus on leveling the less they're playing the game as intended. Not to say people won't, but Anet has pretty clearly stated that leveling faster not only won't be very helpful to you, but you'll end up missing a bunch of content. Sure you can level and go back to see that content...but will you? Players who level faster, because that's what they do in other games, are the same sorts of players who tend to stay in the later zones, because it's the same habit of thought that motivates them. If leveling was that important, you wouldn't delevel when changing zones.

Guild Wars 2 is very different than your typical MMO. I don't really expect a lot of people to change how they play, but a lot of people will. Those who race through the game to get to 80 will probably be disappointed to find that there's nothing to find there...at least not anything more than they've already experienced. There's no big raid waiting for you. There's the same sorts of experiences you've been having all along.

And with no server firsts or anything like that...what's really the point?

I always went back to see old content. I think saying powerlevelling players tend to stay in the high zones is a bit of a broad generalisation and not necessarily true for any type of majority.

And "levelling faster" basically means "spending more time". The biggest "speed improve" is not actually just raising the xp/hour gain, it's spending a ton of time during the first week. There is a limit to xp/hour and that is usually rather easy to reach in various MMOs. Having said that, in SWTOR you could cut a lot of time skipping the dialogues. However, I know of no one doing that.

It's player habit I'm talking about. I'm not talking about specific people. I've watched people play MMOs for years and people are creatures of habit. They go from MMO to MMO and act the same. It's just how humans are. Sure you're different...but that doesn't substantially change the fact that most people are creatures of habit.

If you're talking about people that hop from MMO to MMO, that may be true. I never associated with anyone like that, so I have no idea. I mostly know people that stick to a game for a long time. And they tend to play the hell out of a game before they give it up. That includes "lower content".

I think most people hop from game to game because most MMOs suck. Not a whole lot of people stayed in games like AoC or War or even Rift long term. About half the population left Rift. SWToR is a ship sinking fast. Most people don't stay in MMOs, not so much because they are game hoppers, but because they don't like what they see. Maybe that will change here..but it doesn't mean people won't bring habits from other MMOs. WoW tends to be the MMO exception not the MMO rule.
